MARGUERITE SPAETHLING OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a freshman from Larkspur, Calif., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Thursday, September 1st through Sunday, September 4th.
Spaethling was named to the all-tournament team of the Colorado College Classic in her first collegiate weekend.
Spaethling started in all three matches, recording 25 kills and a team-high 11 blocks, averaging 8.3 kills and 3.7 blocks a match.
Spaethling also hit a team-best .512 attack percentage with 25 kills in 41 attempts and just four errors. The middle-hitter had a hand in five of the team's six blocks to lead the team at the net in a 3-0 win over Hardin-Simmons, while adding 4 kills.
Spaethling led the Tigers with 10 kills and 2 blocks in a sweep of Lewis & Clark. She also led the team for the third time this season in blocks with four in a rematch against Hardin-Simmons, while also hitting a team-high 11 kills on 15 attempts with only one error for a .667 hitting percentage.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior libero Jessie Koster of the University of Dallas anchored the Crusaders defensively with 126 digs, including being two shy from a career-high with 41 in the team's season-opening victory at Arlington Baptist College. Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Lawson of Centenary College recorded a match best in digs, tallying more than 20 digs for the third time in her collegiate career against McMurry. Sophomore outsided hitter Sarah Mullens of Trinity University finished the weekend with 83 digs (6.38/set) and 10 service aces (0.77/set) to pace Trinity in both categories. Junior defensive specialist Mathis Popelsky of Texas Lutheran University recorded a career-best 36 digs in the five set win over East Texas Baptist, averaging 5.2 digs per set.
