DONNIE
MURRAY OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a
junior goalie on the men's lacrosse team from Chandler, Ariz.,
has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending March 20, 2011.
For the past two years while
at Southwestern, Murray has
single-handedly helped raise awareness and set up
fundraisers for a young man named Brady, who is the son of his
former coach in Arizonia and is currently struggling with
cancer.
A member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Murray
has talked to all fraternities and sororities on campus, as well as
the student body, faculty, staff, and administrators, in an effort
to raise awareness about young Brady's fight. This year, in an
effort to raise money to offset the cost of the the bills
associated with treatments, the lacrosse team, spearheaded by
Murray, has been selling bracelets with Brady's
family motto "B StrongBelieve", on one side, and "Brady's Bucs", on
the other side.
It is not uncommon after a game, or before practice, or even in the
hotel room, for Murray to be talking on Skype
with Brady himself, who now wants to be a goalie and carries around
a goalie stick all the time thanks
to Murray's love and devotion to Brady
himself.
"Not a day goes by when Donnie does not talk to Brady or his former
coach," said assistant Southwestern lacrosse coach Bill
Bowman. "The work ethic taught to him by his coach as well as
his willingness to do so many things behind the scenes for the team
and people in need make him an outstanding candidate for this
prestigious award."
