DEREK KING OF
RHODES COLLEGE, a senior from
Adamsville, Ala., who is a wide receiver on
the Lynx' football team, has been selected the SCAC
Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the
week ending October 18, 2009.
On the gridiron, King has 13 catches for 134 yards
and one score this season and is averaging 21.5 yards per return on
kickoffs for the Lynx.
Off the field, King is even busier. He has
been a volunteer at the Memphis Grizzlies Academy the past two
years. At the Acadmey, he organized projects, served as weight room
monitor and was a tutor and teacher of 10th grade English.
King has also worked as a senior counselor/coach
at the Memphis University School's SLAM Program. The SLAM
(Students, Leaders and Athletes in Memphis) Program is a program
for fifth-eighth graders that promotes intensive academics and
competitive sports.
He also taught public speaking to fifth and sixth graders and
leadership skills to seventh and eighth graders.
King has also served on the Education
Panel at the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference's national convention.
This semester, King is serving as an intern with
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Inc. Specifically,
King is working with the AMACHI program - a
faith-based initiative to find "Bigs" for children who have parents
who are incarcerated.
