DEREK KING OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior from Adamsville, Ala., who is a wide receiver on the Lynx' football team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 18, 2009.

On the gridiron, King has 13 catches for 134 yards and one score this season and is averaging 21.5 yards per return on kickoffs for the Lynx.

He also taught public speaking to fifth and sixth graders and leadership skills to seventh and eighth graders.

King has also served on the Education Panel at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's national convention.

This semester, King is serving as an intern with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Inc. Specifically, King is working with the AMACHI program - a faith-based initiative to find "Bigs" for children who have parents who are incarcerated.
