SUWANEE, Ga. - Rhodes remained perfect in SCAC play after a 1-0 victory at home against Centre thanks to a game winning goal from senior forward Lindsey Gurkovich. With just three SCAC games remaining the Lynx are looking to become the first team in the history of the conference to finish the year with a perfect conference record.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Centre split a pair of SCAC road contests this past weekend. On Friday the Colonels defeated Hendrix 3-1 behind the game winning goal from Katy Meyer. On Sunday Centre fell to Rhodes 1-0 despite holding a 12-10 penalty corner advantage against the Lynx. The Colonels will take the week off from action before returning to action on October 22nd against division II Bellarmine.
Margaret Ellis scored two first-half goals to lead
DePauw to a 3-1 victory over Sewanee in the only
game of the week. The two scores lifted her season total to 16
which tied the SCAC mark previously set in 2008 by Sewanee's Lyn
Hancock. With the win, DePauw improved to 10-2 on the season and
4-1 in SCAC play. Ellis scored just seven minutes into the
contest to give DePauw the early advantage and she tallied her
second score at 28:37. Sewanee scored near the end of the first
half, but DePauw’s Addie McDonnell added a goal in the second
half to secure the victory. DePauw had a 26-3 advantage in shots
and led in corners, 14-2. Goalkeeper Liz Attewell made one save for
DePauw. The Tigers have already secured their 18th straight .500 or
better season.
Hendrix earned a two-game split over the weekend with a
3-1 loss to Centre College on Friday night and a 5-0 rout of
Transylvania University on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix’s
win on Sunday snapped a four-game skid and puts the Warriors at 2-7
overall and 0-5 in SCAC play. Centre came in and controlled
the tempo right away on Friday evening at Warrior Field. The
Colonels scored their go-ahead goal just two minutes into the game
on sophomore midfielder Maddie Cristofoli’s first goal of the
year. Centre scored two more unanswered goals before halftime
off penalty corners. Junior midfielder Katy Meyer netted her
second goal of the season off a rebound in the 16th minute and
first year midfielder Courtney Kuiper recorded her sixth goal of
the year off a deflection in the 25th minute. The Warriors
picked up their defensive front in the second half and evened the
shot tally at 5-5 in the final 35 minutes. Hendrix finally
reached the scoreboard in the 53rd minute when senior forward Abby
Coleman sent a penalty stroke to the back board. Warriors’
senior keeper Alyssa Havens made seven saves in the game and
Colonels’ sophomore keeper Cece Lindsey denied three
shots. Hendrix sophomore forward Kelly Rappe scored two goals
and senior forward Lexy Byrne netted her first career goal to help
lead the Warriors to their second win over Transylvania this
year. The Warriors took down the Pioneers, 4-0, in Lexington,
Ky. on Sept. 19. The Warriors immediately dominated
possession and jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage on
Rappe’s back-to-back goals, her fourth and fifth goal of the
season, in the 10th and 11th minute. Rappe’s second
goal came off an assist from Coleman on a breakaway. Senior
defender Heather Newell gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead by knocking in
a rebound on a penalty corner in the 19th minute. Hendrix
would take its three-goal mark into halftime. Byrne was
called upon to take over penalty corner duties after senior
defender Taylor LaFortune went down with a leg injury in the 46th
minute. Byrne stepped up and sent a perfect pass from the
baseline to Coleman in the 55th minute and a shot from the top of
the arc smacked the back board, sealing the deal for Hendrix
4-0. Byrne then put herself in perfect position to tap in a
deflection off a penalty corner in the 57th minute for her first
career score.
Rhodes went 2-0 on the weekend with big victories at home
over Transylvania and Centre. The Lynx advanced to 11-1 on
the season and 5-0 in SCAC play. In Saturday’s 10-1 win
over the Pioneers nine different Lynx players scored with two goals
coming from senior Libby Feaster. Lindsey Gurkovich fueled
Rhodes’ offense this weekend and scored the only goal in the
1-0 win over Centre on Sunday. Sarah Dockery recorded 13
saves in the shut out win in goal and was aided by strong defensive
efforts from Marie Mason and Sara Sanders. The Lynx face
Washington and Lee at Sewanee on Friday before enjoying a few days
off for fall break.
Sewanee went 0-2 this weekend, dropping matches to DePauw,
3-1, and 8th-ranked, Division II Bellarmine, 7-1. Senior Taylor
Skeen picked up Sewanee’s only score in the SCAC match up
with DePauw. Skeen was able to get the visiting Tigers on the board
with just 37 seconds left in the first half after a penalty corner.
Carly Grimm took the corner and Skeen converted on her pass, making
it 2-1 DePauw. DePauw’s Addie McDonnell added an insurance
goal in the 61st minute to give DePauw the 3-1 victory. DePauw out
shot Sewanee, 26-3, and led in corners, 14-2. Skeen was again the
only bright spot for the Tigers on Sunday, as Sewanee fell to host
Bellarmine 7-1. The Knights held the advantage in shots, 23-8, over
the Tigers and also led in corners, 10-3. Anna Morrow netted six
saves in 35 minutes of play for Sewanee, while Emily Detmer added
two saves in the second half. The Tigers return to action on
Saturday when they play host to Washington and Lee University.
