JAMES
SAPP OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a sophomore
forward from Shongaloo, La., has been selected the SCAC Men’s
Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played through Sunday,
February 8th.
For the fifth time in 2014-15, Sapp earns
SCAC Player of the Week honors after leading the Gents to a split
this past weekend against Dallas and Austin College.
Sapp averaged 21.0 pts/gm over the weekend, shooting 13-for-25 from the field and 16-for-22 from the free throw line. He added 14.5 reb/gm, 3.5 ast/gm, and 1.5 stl/gm.
Sapp began the weekend with 18 points, 14 rebound outing in a 87-84 loss to the University of Dallas. He shot 46.2% from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Sapp followed that up with a monstorious 24 point, 15 rebound game against Austin College. He shot 7-for-12 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free throw line. He also added two steals in the contest.
For the season, Sapp leads the league in points with 16.3 pts/gm and rebounds with 8.3 reb/gm. He now has seven double-doubles on the season. He is third in the league in field goal percentage at 53.3% and sixth in the league in steals at 24.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior forward
Cedric Hudson of Austin College had a strong weekend
for Austin College, averaging 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game
while shooting 58.8% from the field in two games. Senior forward Chris Lesnansky of
Colorado College matched his season high of 24 points
for the third time on Friday at Austin. Recorded game highs in
points and rebounds in both games last weekend. Senior forward Aaron Wyatt of
Dallas elped Dallas post a 2-0 weekend over a pair of
conference foes, including a dramatic overtime victory versus
top-ranked at the time, Centenary College. The forward from Frisco,
Texas, garnered a double-double against the Gents with a team-high
16 points, and matched a team-best 11 rebounds. He added three
assists and connected on his only three-pointer of the contest with
about a minute remaining in regulation. The trey cut the deficit to
72-69 and helped instrument a 13-4 run in the final 2:29 minutes of
the game. Wyatt scored all 16 points after halftime, with 10
occurring in the second frame. Against Colorado College, Wyatt
totaled 11 points and again managed a team-high six boards. Senior guard Stevan Guerrero of
Schreiner led the Mountaineers with 19.5 pts/gm to go
with 7.5 reb/gm and 3.5 ast/gm as Schreiner went 0-2 over the
weekend. He scored 25 points in a seven point loss to Southwestern.
Sophomore forward Zach
Whitlock of Southwestern was just two rebounds shy of
posting a double-double this weekend as the Pirates secured two
wins at home. He averaged 11.5 points and 9 rebounds per game while
shooting 61.1% from the floor. Sophomore guard Jordan Kouremetis of
Texas Lutheran led the Bulldogs to a pair of conference
wins by averaging 17.5 points per game and shooting 52.6 percent
from the field and 53.3 percent from the three-point line.
Kouremetis scored 17 points and registered two rebounds and two
assists in the win over Schreiner. Against Trinity, Kouremetis
recorded 18 points, four rebounds and two assists. He made five of
his nine three-point attempts against the Tigers. Senior guard Matt Selling of
Trinity averaged 18.0 points/game and shot 64.3%
(9-14) from three-point range in a pair of SCAC road losses for the
Tigers last weekend.
