Trinity Men and Women Take Lead After Day 2 of SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships

SHENANDOAH, Texas - The Trinity University men and women find themselves in first place after the second day of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving championships. The Tiger men  have a 10 point lead over DePauw University while the Tiger women have a 53 point lead over DePauw as well. Day Two Team Scores

Trinity's women helped open up their large thanks in no small part to its diving on Thursday. The Tigers placed eight divers in the top 11 as sophomore Ruth Hahn upset the reigning three-time defending SCAC champion Hayley Emerick on the 1-meter board. Hahn tallied a 475.80, just edging Emerick's 473.90, to win her first SCAC diving championship.

Rounding out Trinity's eight top finishers were Kathryn Sheldon (3rd-456.35), Lynne Bettinger (5th-427.20), Gabriella Caglieri (7th-348.10), Kristen Nordstrom (8th-336.00), Rebecca Parrish (10th-331.05) and Madison Kahler (11th-323.40). Emerick was looking to become the first female student-athlete in SCAC history (since 1991-92) to win four straight 1-meter diving competitions.

Centre College's 200 free relay team of Colleen Maggard, Shannon Wofford, Laren Gates and Clark Weber set a new SCAC championship record by winning with a time of 1:36.20, breaking the previous best mark by .13 seconds. Weber also won the 500 free in an SCAC championship record time. (5:00.70).

On the men's side, wins in the 200 free relay (1:23.36), 200 IM (1:55.28) and 400 medley relay (3:26.09 - new SCAC record) put DePauw within striking distance of Trinity. The Indiana Tigers trail the Texas tigers by just 10 (304-294) with two days of competition left.

In perhaps the race of the night, Colorado College junior Jordan DeGayner edged DePauw junior Johnny Montgomery by three-hundredths of a second to claim the 50 free title. DeGayner clocked a 21.02 while Montgomery nearly topped that with a 21.05.

After two days of competition, a total of four SCAC championship records have been set (two men's & two women's) and 11 NCAA "B" cuts have been achieved.

Day three of the 2011 SCAC Championships resumes at the Conroe ISD Natatorium on Friday, February 18 with preliminary action at 10:30 a.m. CT followed by championship finals action at 6:30 p.m. CT.
