COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jordan DeGayner added to his impressive list of awards by being named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

DeGayner, a junior biochemistry major who has compiled a 3.86 grade-point average, is the first CC swimmer and 18th student-athlete overall to earn the highly-competitive distinction since the program began in 1952.

“Jordan has achieved a solid balance in his life, enabling him to excel in multiple areas,” head coach Anne Goodman James said. “He is truly deserving of the recognitions he continues to receive. His accomplishments so far just give us a glimpse of the great things he will achieve in the future.”

Despite missing the first half of the season while studying abroad, DeGayner was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Meet at the conference championships. He won three individual titles there and set an SCAC record while winning the 100-yard butterfly in 49.83 seconds.

He also finished first in the 50 (21.02) and 100 freestyle (45.66), and his split of 1:40.13 while leading off the 800 free relay was 2.16 seconds faster than the winning time in the 200 free.

At the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., DeGayner earned All-America honors by finishing fourth in the 200 free. His time of 1:38.64 in the prelims set an SCAC open standard and lowered his own school record.

DeGayner also earned honorable mention All-America honors with a 13th-place finish in the 100 free. His effort of 45.08 in a three-way swim-off improved upon his CC record and was the second fastest in SCAC history.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution.
