- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College picked up a dramatic overtime win in its only match of the week, a 2-1 win over the University of Dallas. The 'Roos fell in a 1-0 hole early before Chris Melton scored on assists from Stephen Crisco and Garrett Evans with just 10 seconds left in regulation, sending things to overtime knotted at 1-1. The 'Roos got their second last minute goal in the first overtime when Memo Allande scored with only 14 seconds remaining on assists from Evans and Robert Lamilla. Austin College owned a 28-12 shot advantage in the match and will wrap up their season with a pair of matches against Rhodes and Hendrix this weekend.

Birmingham-Southern
went on the road this week and lost a tough match to Hendrix, 3-2, and tied with Rhodes, 1-1. Junior striker Garner Shivers scored both goals against Hendrix, while junior Sean Head scored the Panthers lone goal against the Lynx. The Panthers are back at home this weekend, hosting Oglethorpe, Friday, and Sewanee, Sunday, at BSC Soccer Park.

Centre
lost a heartbreaker in their only game of the weekend. Playing at Maryville College (TN) on Saturday afternoon, Centre would go down 1-0 early before tying the game at 1-1 at halftime behind a Jack Goblirsch goal. Again Centre would fall behind in the second half 2-1 before fighting back once again to tie the score at 2-2 with less than 10 minutes to play, with the goal coming from Ben Van Nevel. After missing a handful of opportunities to win the game in OT, Maryville would be the ones to cash in as they struck with just 20 seconds to go in the second overtime, winning the game 3-2 (2OT). The loss drops Centre to 11-4-2 on the year, while their SCAC record remains 6-1-2. Centre plays their final two games of the season at home next weekend, taking on Southwestern University on Friday night and #1 Trinity University on Sunday.

Colorado
College plays its final two conference matches of the season when Hendrix College and Rhodes College visit Stewart Field on Friday and Sunday, respectively. CC is 3-3-2 at home this season, 3-2-1 on the grass pitch. The Tigers could finish as high as fifth place with at least one victory this weekend. CC added a match against Division II Colorado Christian University on Saturday, Nov. 13, to make up for the conference game against Austin College that could not be played because heavy rain on Oct. 23.

#11 DePauw
was idle last week and returns to action this weekend when it hosts the top two teams in the SCAC standings. The Tigers still have a chance to win the SCAC title, but will need some help to do so. Additionally, 11th-ranked DePauw is still in the hunt for an NCAA at-large bid.

Hendrix
earned its first SCAC weekend sweep of the season after a 3-2 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday night and then a 3-0 win over Millsaps on Sunday afternoon.  The Warriors jumped from an 11th place ranking in last week’s SCAC standings to a tie for sixth with Rhodes in this week’s league standings.  The Warriors now stand at 7-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the SCAC.  The HendrixCollege men’s soccer team scored just enough goals in the first half to outlast Birmingham-Southern on a cold night at Warrior Field.  Warriors’ junior forward Duncan Keegan scored a pair of goals to lead the way.  Keegan put Hendrix on top early with a penalty kick in the 10th minute.  He then netted his seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a rebound from about eight yards out.  Sophomore midfielder Dylan Reed would score the Warriors’ final goal, his first of the season, in the 35th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Kevin Gregory.  Reed hammered home a shot from about 12 yards out off a brilliant pass from Gregory.  Warriors’ junior goalkeeper Adam Legg made six saves on the night.  The Panthers split goalkeeping duties at the half as senior Shachar Hovan started the match and made three saves, while first year Alex Levinson finished the contest with four saves. Hendrix sent its lone senior, Mac Barnes, out on top with a dominant win over Millsaps on Sunday.  The Warriors’ earned their third conference win of the season and second shutout.  Keegan recorded the opening goal when he beat the keeper on a one-on-one breakaway from 20 yards out.  Keegan netted his eighth goal of the year off an assist from junior forward Colin Thompson. Sophomore defender Grant Womack scored his first goal of the season with a low shot to the opposite corner from five yards out in the 68th minute.  Reed made his fourth assist of the campaign on the score.  Thompson put the game well out of reach with his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute off a double-assist from sophomore midfielder Connor Silvestri and junior midfielder Taylor Davenport.  Legg denied two shots in his fifth career shutout.

Millsaps dropped a pair of conference matches on the road this week, falling to Rhodes 2-1 on Friday night and Hendrix 3-0 on Sunday. The Majors will close our their regular season with a pair of home conference matches this weekend against Sewanee and Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe
traveled to Texas this past weekend and were topped by Southwestern and Trinity. The Petrels are now 6-9-1 on the season and will wrap up the slate this weekend at Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps.

Rhodes
went 1-0-1 on the weekend in SCAC play.  Rhodes hosted Millsaps College on Friday night.  The Lynx started off the scoring halfway through the first half, when senior midfielder, Eric Stradley, slid to save the ball from going across the end line and found Will Cooner at the top of the 6, who tucked away the shot.  Rhodes remained on the offensive throughout the half, outshooting the Majors 11-3.  Millsaps would convert a penalty kick 7 minutes into the 2nd half to knot the score up at 1-1.  Rhodes regained the momentum, and finally capitalized in the 73rd minute, when Christian Kurth buried a cross from Nick Bailey.  The Lynx held on for the 2-1.  Rhodes hosted Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.  It was a very physical, back and forth match.  The Lynx would jump on the board first 6 minutes into the 2nd half, as Eric Stradley buried home a header off a Nick Bailey free kick.  Birmingham-Southern would fight back and eventually find the equalizer with 10 minutes to play in regulation, scoring off a header on a corner kick.  Neither team could capitalize on the numerous opportunities in overtime, and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

Sewanee
dropped two SCAC matches over the weekend, falling 12-0 to Trinity on Friday night and 5-0 to Southwestern on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, Trinity out shot Sewanee 31-5 on their way to a 5-0 lead before running away with the 12-0 victory. Freddie Delchamps collected three saves for the Tigers and Derek Williams came up with one save in the loss. On Sunday, the host Pirates out shot Sewanee 22-12 and held the edge in corner kicks, eight to five, on their way to the 5-0 win. Delchamps picked up six saves and Williams tallied four saves in the contest. Sewanee is now 3-10-3 overall and 1-4-2 in SCAC play. The Tigers will wrap up the regular season this weekend when they go on the road for contests with Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.

Southwestern
wrapped up their long home stand over the weekend with a pair of wins against Oglethorpe and Sewanee to improve to 11-6 on the year and 8-1 in the SCAC. The Pirates needed extra time to defeat the Stormy Petrels on Friday afternoon as the two teams were locked at 1-1 after regulation. Shortly into overtime, however, Southwestern needed just 50 seconds to take the 2-1 win. Sunday's match was a different affair on SU's senior day. Southwestern scored three goals in the first half and piled on two more in the second to dominate Sewanee 5-0. The wins keep SU in second place in the conference with big road games to close out the season. They face #4 in the conference, Centre, on Friday night and then #3 in the SCAC, DePauw, on Sunday. Two wins would mean a lot as the Pirates are in hot pursuit of their first-ever NCAA tournament bid.

#1 Trinity
ranked No. 1 by the NSCAA, earned a pair of home wins in SCAC play over the weekend, beating Sewanee 12-0 on Friday night, and then edging Oglethorpe 1-0 on Sunday. In Friday’s lopsided win, eight different Trinity players scored goals, and first-year Brian Hines scored a second-half hat trick in the game. Peter Philpott also had two second-half goals off the bench for the Tigers. Zach Garcia scored twice in the first half to help lead the team, while Tommy Barros scored the eventual game-winner. On Sunday, Trinity and Oglethorpe looked to be on their way to overtime when Kyle Porter’s diving header found the back of the net in the 84th minute of play. The win put Trinity atop the SCAC table with a 9-0 SCAC record this season. The regular season will close with Trinity making an extremely difficult road trip to Centre and DePauw over the weekend. Three teams will fight it out for the 2010 SCAC title this weekend, with Southwestern, Trinity, and DePauw still alive for the top spot.
