Women's Soccer Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Trinity remained the lone undefeated team in SCAC play this past weekend with two home wins against Sewanee and Oglethorpe. While the TU Tigers control their own destiny for a second straight conference title, Centre and DePauw depending on how this weekends plays out remain alive for a shot at the conference title and AQ bid to the NCAA Tournament.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College played only one game last week, picking up a 2-1 road victory at Mary Hardin-Baylor to improve to 11-4 overall this season. The 'Roos fell in a 1-0 hole just 13 minutes in, but second half goals by Natalie Nelms and Shelley Casey lifted the team to the win. Nelms scored on a free kick in the 51st minute to tie things up and Casey punched in a rebound of Lauren Scott's attempt for the game winner. Kaitlin Elledge made three saves in the net for the 'Roos, who wrap up the year this weekend with home matches against Rhodes College and Hendrix College.

Birmingham-Southern
picked up two more shutouts this week, defeating both Hendrix and Rhodes by the score of 3-0. Junior Alicia Plotky was big on offense for BSC, scoring two goals and recording an assist in each game. The BSC defense, anchored by senior Brittany Soto, was also impressive as the Panthers have now recorded three straight shutouts. BSC is at home this weekend, hosting Oglethorpe on Friday and Sewanee on Sunday.

#25 Centre
fell to Denison University Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Granville, Ohio. The Colonels capitalized on a corner attempt in the 5th-minute of play to earn the first goal of the match. Senior Brit Garr took the kick and sophomore defender, Rachel Brannen headed-in the goal to give the Colonels the early lead. The Denison equalizer would come just before the half as the result of a successful PK attempt. The game-winner came in the 46th-minute of play and would ultimately lead to the 2-1 Denison decision. Denison out-shot Centre in the match by a margin of 16-14 while Centre had the edge in corners at 5-1. Centre returns to conference play at home this weekend. Friday evening, November 5th, they will face the Pirates of Southwestern. Kick-off is set for 6:00 pm EST. Centre will then take-on Trinity, Sunday, November 7th at Noon EST.

DePauw
posted its seventh shutout of the season in a non-conference win Friday evening over visiting Earlham College. With the 2-0 victory, the Tigers improved to 10-5 on the season. Dana Sprague put DePauw on the board at the 18:02 mark, scoring on an assist from Julia Drummond for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Drummond added a goal of her own in the second half, putting the ball in the top corner of the net at 55:07 to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. DePauw outshot the Quakers, 12-11, while Earlham recorded a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Lauren Palfrey and Caroline Kerr made three saves each in goal for the Tigers.

Hendrix picked up its first conference win of the season with a 2-1 overtime thriller against Millsaps on Sunday afternoon.  Hendrix dropped a 3-0 contest to Birmingham-Southern on Friday night.  The Warriors now stand at 3-11-1 overall and 1-7-1 in SCAC play, good for ninth place in league standings.  Birmingham-Southern scored two goals in the first half and netted an insurance score just two minutes into the second half on Friday.  Panthers’ junior forward Alicia Plotky scored two goals and made one assist to lead her team to their third conference win.  Plotky scored the Panthers’ opening goal in the 34th minute off an assist from first year defender Amanda Babbin.  Babbin sent a high corner kick to the far post and Plotky headed the ball to the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.  Junior midfielder Linda Amaya put Birmingham-Southern on top 2-0 off an assist from Plotky in the 39th minute.  Plotky then scored the final goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Amaya.  Hendrix goalkeeper Allison Mosley denied 13 shots in the match, bringing her season total to 138 saves.  Hendrix junior midfielder Hannah McGrew sent a screaming shot to the back of the net from 30 yards out in the 92nd minute to give the Warriors their first conference win of the season on Sunday.  McGrew found space and sent a rocket off her left foot to the low corner just 2:34 into overtime.  Junior forward Tristan Stolz netted the Warriors’ opening goal in the ninth minute off an assist from sophomore forward Ana Contreras.  Millsaps sophomore defender Margaret Eggers knotted the game in the 23rd minute off a cross from senior midfielder Emily Townsend.  Hendrix outshot Millsaps 19-12, while the Majors owned a 13-9 advantage in corner kicks.  Mosley added seven saves to her league-high total.

Millsaps
dropped a pair of conference matches on the road this week, falling 4-1 to Rhodes on Friday before losing 2-1 to Hendrix on Sunday in overtime. The Majors will close out their regular season this weekend with a  pair of conference matches against Sewanee and Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe
travelled to Texas this past weekend and dropped contests at Southwestern and Trinity. The Petrels are bow 7-8-2 on the season and will finish up this coming weekend at Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps.

Rhodes
went 1-1 on the weekend in SCAC play.  Rhodes hosted Millsaps College on Friday night.  The Lynx started off the scoring 22 minutes into the game with a strike from Zoe Clark.  Despite outshooting the Majors 11-1 in the half, the score would remain 1-0 at half.  Millsaps equalized the score just 6 minutes into the 2nd half, and almost went up 2-1 minutes later, but was denied by the post.  Rhodes would regain composure and put the game out of reach with 3 goals in a 7 minute span.  Goals were scored by Sarah DiLella, Laura Flink, and Ashley Ladd with assists coming from Laura Flink, Zoe Clark, and Caroline Colpoys, respectively.  The game would end 4-1 with the Lynx outshooting the Majors 22-3.  Rhodes hosted Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.  Despite outshooting the Panthers 12-9 and holding an advantage in corner kicks 6-4, it would be Birmingham-Southern that capitalized on all of their opportunities, defeating Rhodes 3-0.

Sewanee
split their two matches this weekend, falling to #7 Trinity on Friday evening, while topping Southwestern University on Sunday. The Tigers fell to Trinity 2-0 after being out shot 19 to four in the contest. Sewanee goalkeeper Virginia Zakas picked up seven saves in 90 minutes of action. On Sunday, the Tigers rebounded from their loss with a 2-1 victory over host Southwestern. Sewanee got on the board first when Faith Spencer scored off a pass from Tiki Slay to put the Tigers ahead 1-0. Southwestern’s Amy Douglas equalized things later, when in the second half, she took a pass from Lindsay Jakszta and put the ball past Zakas. Kabler Colhoun netted the game-winner for the Tigers at the 73 minute mark when her unassisted shot bounced past Pirate goalie Sarah Nonaka for the 2-1 win. After the split, the Tigers are now 10-6 overall and 4-4 in SCAC play. Sewanee will round out the regular season on Friday and Sunday this weekend with matches against Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.

Southwestern
split their final home contests of the season to move to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the conference after defeating Oglethope on Friday and falling to Sewanee on Sunday. The Pirates needed just 1:30 to take the lead on Friday over the Stormy Petrels and then tacked one more on in the second half for a little cushion to win 2-0. In Sunday's contest against Sewanee, it was the Tigers that scored first. Southwestern evened the count in the second half but just 12 minutes later Sewanee scored the game winner when SU was unable to clear the ball out of the box after a shot and save. Sunday was the last home game for nine Pirates. Southwestern heads to Centre on Friday night and DePauw on Sunday afternoon to close out the season.

#7 Trinity
finished off its home schedule with a pair of SCAC wins over the weekend, moving its way into first place in the SCAC standings. Trinity defeated both Sewanee and Oglethorpe with 2-0 shutouts over the weekend, scoring three of the four goals in the second half. Against Oglethorpe, the Tigers got a goal in the seventh minute, then couldn’t find the net again for an insurance goal until the 81st minute. In Friday’s game, the two teams played through 60 scoreless minutes before Trinity finally got on the board, also scoring a late insurance goal in the final 15 minutes. The 2010 SCAC Championship will be on the line this weekend, as Trinity travels to Centre and DePauw for the final regular season games of the season. The Tigers control their own destiny headed into the final weekend, but both teams they face are also fighting for the conference title.
