AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College kicked off the Loren Dawson era in fine fashion, as the Kangaroos dominated Southwest Assemblies of God on both sides of the ball in a 28-6 victory on Saturday. The ’Roos took advantage of two early turnovers by the Lions to jump out to a 14-0 lead after a Travis Zambiasi touchdown pass to Braydon MaQuar and a rushing score by Brogan Funderburg, and the ‘Roos went up 21-0 midway through the second quarter when Zambiasi found Greg Harrell for a 44 yard touchdown strike. After two field goals in the third quarter by SAGU, the ‘Roos put the game away with a five yard touchdown run by Funderburg with just over three minutes left in the game. Zambiasi completed 9-of-15 passes for 134 yards with Harrell the main beneficiary, catching five passes for 79 yards. Funderburg rushed for 43 yards and two scores to lead the ‘Roos and Josh Willis recorded a game-high 13 tackles. Ethan Tanner was also a force defensively, making 12 stops including 1.5 for loss and teaming up for a sack. The ‘Roos will look to make their record 2-0 this weekend when they welcome Texas Lutheran to Sherman in hopes of topping the Bulldogs for the first time since 2003.

Birmingham-Southern opened the season with an exciting home victory, defeating LaGrange College 28-19 in Panther Stadium. Senior wide receiver David Langston was responsible for two of BSC's touchdowns as he ran two punt returns 85+ yards back for scores, breaking the existing long punt return record, twice. He also broke the single-game punt return yardage record with 142 return yards. Sophomore tailback Shawn Morris scored BSC's other two touchdowns. The Panthers travel south to Montgomery this weekend to face NAIA program Faulkner University, Saturday, at 11 a.m.

Trailing 20-17 with 2:43 left in the game, Centre drove 62 yards to tie the game with a field goal, but was unable to stop a two-point conversion in overtime and fell 28-27 to visiting Hanover College Saturday, Sept. 4 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. The loss snaps a five-game season-opening winning streak for the Colonels, who fall to 0-1. The last time Centre dropped the first game of a season was Sept. 4 2004, a 33-24 defeat on the road against Bluffton University. It's also the first time the Colonels have dropped a season-opener at home since a 19-14 loss to Kenyon College Sept. 12, 1998. Centre will return to action Saturday, Sept. 11 with a road contest against Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. The Colonels own a 31-29-1 overall record against the Scots.

DePauw was idle during week one. Head coach Robby Long and the Tigers open up the 2010 season, the 123rd season in school history, September 11 when they play host to former SCAC member Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. DePauw last played the Engineers back on Nov. 5, 2005. The Tigers scored early and often on their way to a 60-21 road win. The last time the two teams played in Greencastle, Ind., DePauw posted a 30-3 win on Nov. 6, 2004. Overall, DePauw leads the all-time series 39-13-1.

Millsaps had #22 Mississippi College sweating well into the fourth quarter Saturday night, but a few costly penalties and an injury late allowed the Choctaws to come away from Harper Davis Field with a narrow 27-23 win in Backyard Brawl XI. The game went back-and-forth all night with neither team able to get more than seven points ahead of the other. Millsaps held a 23-20 lead with just over nine minutes remaining, but two costly personal fouls all but handed the game to the Choctaws who scored on the ensuing drive to set the final score. The Majors played their final series without starting quarterback Garrett Pinciotti who was sidelined with an injury after the Majors’ previous drive. Shane Bowser led the majors’ ground game with 17 carries for 118 yards (110 net). Garrett Pinciotti was 20-of-35 in the air with 219 yards passing and two touchdowns. Defensively Will Hawkins led the way for the Majors with 13 tackles (one for a loss).  The Majors will be on the road next week as they travel to LaGrange, Ga. to take on the LaGrange Panthers for a 1:00 kickoff. They will return to Harper Davis Field on September 18 to open their SCAC title-defense with Austin College, also at 1:00 p.m.

Westminster (Mo.) place kicker Jake Hilton connected on a 27 yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lift the Blue Jays to a 20-17 win over Rhodes in the season opener for both teams at Fulton, Mo. The game winning kick was setup when Westminster recovered a fumble by Rhodes junior quarterback Brett Stoots with 29 seconds to play at the Rhodes 17 yard line. Prior to the Lynx fumble, sophomore cornerback Buddy Legens intercepted a Westminster pass at the Rhodes 27 yard line to halt a Westminster drive. Rhodes tied the game at 17-17 on a Lukas Stockhausen 23 yard field goal with 2:33 to play. The field goal capped a 14 play 46 yard drive. Senior running back Matt Gilbert was the Lynx work horse in the back field, rushing 23 times for 92 yards and scored both Lynx touchdowns. Turnovers hurt the Lynx offense all day. Rhodes was intercepted three times and lost one fumble. The Lynx fall to 0-1 on the season and will host Washington University of St. Louis next Saturday, September 11th at Fargason Field.

Sewanee snapped a 16-game losing streak dating back to September 2008 on Saturday, when they defeated the Earlham College Quakers, 33-14. Freshman Chad Morehead got his first career touchdown and opened the Tiger scoring attack with a 65-yard gallop on the Tigers’ second possession of the game. Zeke Wilson contributed a pair of 2nd quarter rushing touchdowns and Chalankis Brown hauled in a Lee Schurlknight pass for a 30-yard touchdown in the third. Trey Knighton, who replaced Geoff Marolda after a failed 25-yard field goal attempt, nailed two field goals on the day, one from 38 yards with 22 seconds left in the first half and a 27-yarder in the fourth. In his first collegiate game, Schurlknight went 8 of 12 with 125 passing yards. Eight different Tigers carried the ball for a Sewanee offense that racked up 420 yards of total offense, including 277 rushing yards. Morehead led the Tigers with 80 rushing yards, while Wilson added 58. Alfonza Knight paced the Tiger defense with 10 tackles, 1 sack, and a forced fumble. Andrew Walters contributed 8 tackles, six of them solo, and Zac Atkins intercepted a Bryant Foreman pass in the first quarter for the Tigers.

Trinity opened up the 2010 season with a thrilling, double-overtime win over Howard Payne University on Saturday night. After a back-and-forth game, the Tigers looked to take control after scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to go ahead 31-24 with 5:45 to play. Howard Payne battled back, though, tying the game on its next drive to send the game into overtime. Trinity had not played an overtime game since a first-round playoff matchup against East Texas Baptist University, and had not win in overtime since a 2000 playoff game against Bridgewater. The Tigers scored a short field goal to start overtime, then HPU answered with a 50-yard field goal to keep the game going. In the second overtime, Trinity’s defense held and forced another field goal attempt, but this time it missed to give the Tigers a chance to win it. Patrick Granchelli ran the ball 25 yards in three plays to score the game-winning touchdown – his second TD of the game. Trinity will have its open week this weekend, followed by the SCAC opener at home against Rhodes College on September 18.
