Colorado College Wins SCAC Volleyball Title, Automatic Bid to NCAA Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -  The Colorado College Tigers emerged as the champions of the SCAC. Colorado College, the tournament's top seed, beat the third-seeded DePauw Tigers 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18) Saturday night in the final at Trinity's Sams Gym. Box Score

The Tigers, ranked 10th in the nation, also secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Official invitations will be issued Monday, and Colorado College will make its 20th playoff appearance. The Tigers are in their fourth year in the SCAC, and captured their first conference crown. Last year, Colorado College was runner-up to Southwestern. This marked the final SCAC Volleyball Tournament for DePauw, which will become a member of the North Coast Conference next year.

Colorado College senior middle blocker Emily Perkins of Plano, Texas, was selected as Tournament MVP. Also making the elite team for the Tigers were  senior middle blocker Erika Pirotte of Nipomo, Calif.; and junior setter Amy Schornack of Plano.

DePauw had two All-Tournament selections, senior middle blocker Kristen Chynoweth of Frankfort, Ind.; and senior setter Ali Smith of Bloomington, Ind.

Centre senior outside hitter Rebecca Pugh of Colfax, Calif., made the team, as did Trinity junior middle blocker Maddy Hazelwood of Beach City, Texas.

Earlier in the day, Colorado College shut out fourth-seeded Trinity 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-11) in the semifinals. DePauw edged No. 7 Centre 3-2 (29-27, 25-15, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12) in the other semifinal match.

Centre captured third place with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 8-25, 22-25, 15-4) win over Trinity. Southwestern took fifth place, beating No. 8 Millsaps 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16). Fifth-seeded Austin College defeated No. 6 Rhodes 3-1 (25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18) for a seventh-place finish. Ninth place went to No. 9 Hendrix, a 3-2 (30-28, 20-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-10) winner over No. 10 Oglethorpe.
