- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College split on the week falling to nationally ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 before bouncing back to defeat Concodia 4-2. The Roos return to the pitch Saturday as they play host to Dallas Christian University.

Birmingham-Southern
traveled to Sewanee, Tenn., this weekend for the Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational and ended up bringing home their second straight tournament title with a 6-1 win over University of the Ozarks and a 7-1 win over in-state rival Huntingdon College. Junior striker Tyler Evans was named Offensive MVP of the tournament after scoring a hat trick against Ozarks and recording an assist against Huntingdon. Freshman defender Cory Gonzalez was named Defensive MVP, and junior Tony Crocker and sophomore Nico Reitmeier were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Centre got back to their winning ways, taking 2 out of 2 games as they close in on conference play. The Colonels hosted the 21st Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic in Danville, Kentucky, with Hiram College, Oberlin College and Transylvania University all coming in for the tournament.  On Friday night, Centre beat Oberlin College 3-0. On Saturday in the Championship game, Centre defeated Hiram College 6-4. The Colonels, 3-1, embark on a road trip to play the College of Mount. St. Josephs on Friday and Wilmington College on Saturday.

Colorado
College did not allow goal while posting a 1-0-1 record in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. It marks the first time the Tigers have not allowed a goal in three straight games since 2007 when CC blanked four opponents during the month of October. In Friday’s home opener, freshman Andrew Salazar’s first career goal proved to be the game winner. He scored in the 59th minute from 10 yards out after taking a pass from Chris Lutz. Sophomore Matt Fechter provided an insurance goal with an unassisted tally in the 66th minute. His direct kick from just outside the top of the box went off the goalkeepers hand and off the left post. Senior keeper Andy McGhie had to make only one save. McGhie stopped six shots en route to his third consecutive shutout and the fifth of his career. The Tigers finished the game with a 28-12 advantage in total shots and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Colorado College plays host to Carnegie Mellon University on Friday at 4 p.m.

Ryan Keefe scored with 1:16 left in the first overtime and lifted 14th-ranked DePauw to a 1-0 win over Franklin in the week's only game. The Tigers improved to 4-0 with their fourth straight shutout. The 4-0 start is DePauw's best since 2003 and the start marks the first time since 1980 that a DePauw team has opened with four shutouts.

Hendrix
had five different players find the back of the net in its dominant 5-1 victory over Louisiana College on Friday under the lights at Warrior Field.  The Warriors outshot their opponent 25-4 and held possession for the majority of the contest.  Hendrix improved its record to 2-1 on the season.  Louisiana managed to reach the scoreboard first, despite a quick onslaught from Hendrix in the opening minutes.  Junior midfielder Anthony Lee beat two defenders inside the box and found the back of the net after passes from junior defender Tyler Green (free kick) and junior forward Nathan Searcy in the seventh minute of action.  Hendrix regained its composure and knotted the game on a penalty kick from sophomore forward Connor Silvestri in the 10th minute, his sixth goal of the year.  Sophomore defender Grant Womack earned the PK when he was taken down inside the box.  Sophomore midfielder Tresor Mukiza scored the go-ahead goal when he gathered sophomore defender Ryan Menchaca’s shot off the post at the five yard mark in the 20th minute.  The score would remain at 2-1 until the break.  Hendrix picked up the pace out of halftime and made it a two-goal affair when first year midfielder Grant Ingram put himself in excellent position off the left side of the goal to send a rebound in from eight yards out in the 59th minute, his first goal of the year.  Senior forward Mac Barnes put the game well out of reach with his first score of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Colin Thompson in the 74th minute.  Junior forward Duncan Keegan finally put it past the keeper on his seventh shot of the night, his first goal of the year, off an assist from Menchaca in the 81st minute.

Millsaps
fell 3-0 to Berry College in their only contest of the week. The Majors will return to action Sunday as they play host to Rust College.

Oglethorpe was off this past week. The Stormy Petrels, at 2-0-1 on the season, are back in action this Wednesday when they face Piedmont College on Salamone Field.

Rhodes split 1-1 on the weekend. Friday night, the Lynx traveled to Fontbonne University for a night game. Rhodes upended Fontbonne 3-1, with the help from senior forward, Nick Bailey who provided 2 goals. The third Rhodes goal was provided by junior midfielder, Will Wurster. Rhodes traveled to Washington University Sunday afternoon. Washington University defeated Rhodes 2-0. Rhodes moves to 3-1-1 on the season.

Sewanee
opened the weekend on Monday as they faced Washington University in the last day of competition at the Birmingham-Southern Labor Day Classic. The Tigers fell to the Bears 3-1 after playing 60 minutes with only 10 players. Sophomore Samuel Edoung-Biyo provided the Tigers only goal of the day in the 55th minute after knocking a rebound from his own penalty shot past Washington’s goalkeeper. The Tigers hosted the 19th Annual Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational September 11-12th and finished the weekend at 1-1. The Tigers topped Huntingdon College in the first match of the weekend, 4-1, collecting goals from Devon Ball, Garrett Schlosser, and Ford Rushton, and Miller Thornbury. In Sunday’s match, Sewanee fell 1-0 to the University of the Ozarks in a physical battle. The Tigers and Eagles were even through the first 73 minutes, but Guido Salas’ goal broke the tie and was enough to push the Ozarks past Sewanee. The Tigers are 2-3-0 on the season.

The barrage of games continued for the Southwestern Pirates as they hosted the Conference Challenge this weekend. Friday they faced a hot UT Dallas team that started the season 3-0. Southwestern emerged with the 1-0 win. Fantastic team play led to the Pirate goal, scored by Steven Resnik, with Alex Keller and Evan Perkins earning the assists. Saturday the Pirates took on Hardin Simmons University and were unable to find the offensive magic as they fell 1-0. SU had some great chances but the ball seemed just out of reach or off the mark. With the split Southwestern sits at 2-3 on the season and will be taking a well-deserved break this coming week. They return to action on September 24th when they open SCAC Conference play at Rhodes.

No. 23 Trinity
swept the competition in Georgetown, Texas, as three different goalkeepers combined for two shutout victories over the weekend. Trinity opened the weekend by exacting revenge on a Hardin-Simmons team that bounced the Tigers from the playoffs in 2009.  Trinity posted a convincing 3-0 victory this time around, though, jump-starting a tough road trip.  On Saturday afternoon, 23rd-ranked Trinity faced off with No. 25 UT-Dallas, and again came away with the win, this time by a final of 1-0. Tommy Barros scored a pair of goals over the weekend, including the game-winner on Sunday to take the team lead with his fourth goal this season.  Cameron Hogsett may also make a run at the Trinity record for single-season assists, having scored five assists in five games so far.  The record of 19 assists was set by Noe Casanova during the 2008 season. Trinity returns home for a single game this week, facing off against Texas Lutheran University on Thursday night.  The Tigers open SCAC play the following weekend, heading to Hendrix and Rhodes.
