SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity Tigers swept the “A” Singles and Doubles Championships Sunday, in all Trinity finals, at the USTA/ITA Division III Men’s Tennis Southwest Region Championships.
Senior Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll), the No.
2 seed, beat top-seeded Max Frey, a junior from Tulsa, Okla.
(Holland Hall), 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at Delavan Tennis Stadium.
In the Trinity-dominated semifinals, Frey beat fourth-seeded
teammate Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Cocanougher defeated first-year player Greg Haugen of Austin, Texas
(Bowie), 6-4, 6-2.
The “A” Doubles title went to top seeds Cocanougher
and Kowal, in a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 (tiebreak) victory over the No. 2
team of Frey and sophomore Erick DelaFuente of El Paso, Texas
(Coronado).
Cocanougher will represent the Tigers in singles at the National
Small College Championships Oct. 13-17 at Mobile, Ala. The doubles
tandem of Cocanougher and Kowal will make its third appearance at
the ITA national event. Last May, the Trinity duo advanced the NCAA
Doubles Championship match.
The “B” Singles title went to Trinity first-year
player Rohit Goswamy of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (Cate School), who
beat sophomore teammate Trevor Sipos of Alamo, Calif. (Laurel
Springs), 6-2, 6-7 (3), 14-12 (tiebreak).
Goswamy and first-year player Julio Benavides of El Paso
(Coronado), won “B” Doubles by default over Kent Dunson
and Tim Dinehart of Hendrix.
