SUWANEE, Ga. - The SCAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament is set with Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern opening up play on Friday in the quarterfinal match. The winner of game one will move on to face the top seeded Sewanee Tigers in the semis while Colorado College and Centre will square off in the other semifinal match for the right to play for the first ever conference title.

Birmingham-Southern lost a close one at home to
Berry this week, 17-15, on Saturday. It was Senior Day for Ashley
Johnson and Judy Montalvo, members of the first graduating class
for BSC women’s lacrosse since the program was started three
years ago. BSC was also supposed to take on Sewanee at home on
Friday, but the game was postponed due to severe weather. In the
game against Berry, junior Lyndsay Griffin led with four goals,
sophomore Stephanie Gore led with six ground balls and five caused
turnovers, and Johnson led with seven draw controls. The Panthers
will face Sewanee at home this Tuesday at 6 p.m., and then host the
2011 championship this weekend, beginning with a noon game on
Friday.
Centre traveled to Colorado Springs, Co. to take on Fort
Lewis College on Saturday, April 16 and Colorado College on Sunday,
April 17. During the Colonels game against Fort Lewis the score was
tied with just under 20 minutes to go in the first half, but then
the Skyhawks went on a 5-0 run during the next 10 minutes of play.
Centre was unable to recover from the run and they went on to fall
16-10. The following day against Colorado College the Colonels were
able to keep the game close for the first 15 minutes action, but
the Tigers then went on a 6-0 run and a 5-0 to take a 16-6 lead
into halftime. Centre tried to make a comeback in the second half
with a late run, but their effort came a little too late, as they
went on to lose 21-15.
Colorado College extended its winning
streak to six games and improved to 11-1 overall with victories
over Fort Lewis College and Centre College last weekend. In the
18-4 victory over the SkyHawks, the defense led the way by holding
an opponent to fewer than five goals for the third time this
season. Abby Fink stopped 10 of 11 shots during the first half as
the Tigers outscored their guests 12-1. Fink, who reached double
digits for the fifth time this season, made five of her saves on
free position shots. She lowered her goals-against average to 9.10
and improved her saves percentage to .540. CC scored all the goals
it would need during the opening 11.44. Leslie Jacoby and Ellie
Cole each scored the first of their three goals 60 seconds apart to
make the score 4-0 with 20:40 still to be played in the first half,
and Anna Crosby struck for what proved to be the game winner 2:24
later. Cole led the Tiger attack with three goals and a pair of
assists, while Crosby had one assist to go along with her three
tallies. Grace Maloney found the net three times and led the team
with three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. In the
21-15 win over Centre, it was the offense’s turn to shine.
Sarah Phillips scored four of her career-high five goals during the
first half as Colorado College built a commanding 10-point lead and
cruised to a 21-15 victory. The Tigers seized control midway
through the opening frame when Hadley Bergh ignited an 11-1 run
with a pair of goals just 16 seconds apart. After Lara Atkins added
two more tallies, seven of her teammates found the net once as CC
built a commanding 16-5 lead with 2:15 remaining in the opening
frame. Colorado College extended its advantage to 12 goals after
Bergh tacked on her third and fourth markers during the opening
1:35 of the second half, but the Tigers managed only three more
scores the rest of the game. CC launched 43 shots and got goals
from 11 different players as the Tigers reached the 20-goal mark
for the third time this season. Jacoby and Crosby added two goals
apiece, while Cole, Kate Krieger and Kelsey Morell each scored once
and set up another. Colorado College travels to Birmingham, Ala.,
next weekend for the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference tournament.
Millsaps played their final regular season game on
Saturday against the SCAC-leading Sewanee Tigers. The Majors fell
18-4 to end their inaugural season 1-13. The Majors’ lone win
came back on February 26 against Agnes Scott in overtime, 14-11. On
Saturday, the Tigers scored six goals in the opening ten minutes to
control the flow of the game. J.B. Page broke the shutout with
12:05 remaining in the first half with an unassisted goal to put
the Majors on the board, 1-10. Haleigh Williams got the Majors'
second goal with 4:20 remaining in the half, also unassisted, but
the Tigers took a 12-2 advantage into the break. Williams scored
two goals on the day, including her second with 4:10 remaining in
the second half. Senior Claire Stamm got her fifth goal of the
season off an assist from Kenya Strong-Johnston with 47 seconds to
round out the scoring and set the final at 18-4.
Sewanee remained unbeaten in SCAC play this week with an
18-4 victory over Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi
Saturday. Nine different Tigers found the back of the net as
Sewanee outshot the Majors 38-8 to pick up their third straight
conference win. Sewanee scored the first ten goals of the game and
never let the Majors back in the contests. Molly Arnold led the
Tigers with four goals, while Meg Welton chpped in three goals and
three assists. Megan Velie added three goals and one assist,
while Page Carpenter recorded a season-high five assists for the
Tigers. Sewanee will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, Tuesday, for a
make up game with the Panthers at 6 p.m. before heading back tot
Birmingham for the SCAC Championships April 22-24. The Tigers are
10-5 overall and 3-0 in SCAC play.
