SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre and Trinity remained the lone unbeated SCAC teams this past weekend after picking up a pair of conference wins. Centre (14-1, 7-0) extended its win streak to ten games with wins over Austin College and Dallas. The Tigers of Trinity (12-1, 6-0) pushed their winning streak to 11 with home wins over Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps.

Austin College split its two
games over the weekend, topping DePauw 1-0 for the team’s
eighth shutout of the season before falling 1-0 in a hard fought
contest with Centre on Sunday. Against DePauw, Natalie Nelms
tallied her second goal of the season to give the ’Roos the
victory and Kaitlin Elledge made six saves in the net. On Sunday
the ‘Roos fell in a 1-0 hole at halftime and could not
equalize despite strong chances late from Nicole Breckling, who saw
her 30 yard shot punched over the crossbar, and Ali Ryan, whose
late shot attempt was saved off of the post. Elledge made three
stops in the match. This week the ‘Roos step out of
conference play to head on the road to face the University of
Dallas on Saturday.
Birmingham-Southern went to Texas this weekend and dropped
both contests, losing to Southwestern on Friday, 1-0, and No. 10
Trinity on Sunday, 3-1. Junior Alicia Plotky scored the
Panthers’ lone goal against Trinity, with junior Linda Amaya
recording an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Papas played the
entirety of both games in the net for BSC, recording four saves
against Southwestern and eight against Trinity. The Panthers return
home this Saturday for Homecoming weekend on the Hilltop, taking on
Millsaps at 4 p.m.
#16 Centre earned two conference wins on the road this
weekend. Friday evening, at Dallas, Centre defeated the University
of Dallas 4-1. Sunday afternoon, Centre earned their 7th shut-out
of the year in a 1-0 decision over Austin. Centre returns home this
weekend to play travel-partner, DePauw. Kick-off is Saturday,
October 23rd at 5:00 pm EST on Colonels Field.
DePauw is 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC after losing at
Austin by a 1-0 scored and taking a 4-2 non-conference win at
Dallas. Austin scored the game's only goal at 39:45 as DePauw held
a 12-8 edge in shots and a 7-0 margin in corners. Lauren Palfrey
totaled one save for DePauw. Angela Cotherman scored a pair of
goals in leading DePauw to the win at Dallas. Cotherman scored the
game's first goal at 19:50 and its last with less than four minutes
remaining. Dana Sprague's goal at 27:54 gave DePauw a 2-0 lead
before Dallas made it 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in
the half. Julia Drummond pushed the DePauw lead to 3-2 with a score
at 50:53 before Cotherman added the insurance score. DePauw outshot
Dallas 43-5 and held a 6-1 edge in corners. Lauren Palfrey recorded
one save in the first half and Caroline Kerr finished in goal for
the Tigers by playing the final 45 minutes.
Hendrix took the week off from action last week. The
Warriors will return to the pitch this weekend on the road against
Oglethorpe and Sewanee in two SCAC tilts.
Millsaps dropped a pair of conference matches on the road
this week, falling 7-0 to Trinity on Friday before losing 2-0 to
Southwestern on Sunday. The Majors were outshot 60-4, including
39-0 against the Tigers, resulting in the double shutout. Millsaps
will travel across to Birmingham on Saturday to take on the
Panthers at 4:00 p.m. at BSC Soccer Park.
Oglethorpe lost their only contest of the week at Emory,
4-1. Senior Mary Beth Horton assisted freshman Clara St. Urbain on
Oglethorpe’s lone goal. It was St. Urbain’s eighth goal
of the season. The Petrels are now 7-5-1 and will get set to host
Hendrix and Rhodes this weekend on Salamone Field.
Rhodes lost their only contest of the weekend to visiting
Berry College in a non-conference match up. Berry scored in
the 72nd minute to take the 1-0 victory. Berry outshot the
Lynx 16-4 in the match. Rhodes gets back into SCAC play this
week, traveling to Sewanee and Oglethorpe.
Sewanee sophomore Bess Goodman scored two
first-half goals one minute and 31 seconds apart, as the Tiger
women’s soccer team downed host Covenant College 3-1 on
Friday. Goodman’s goals, her sixth and seventh goals in the
last three games, put Sewanee ahead early in the first half and the
Tigers never looked back, as they cruised to their third win in a
row. The Tigers started off hot in the first half, collecting eight
shots in the period, while limiting the Scots to just three.
Goodman opened up the scoring with her seventh goal of the season
when she put one past Covenant goalkeeper Bethany Holman just over
fourteen minutes into the contest. Goodman’s goal came off a
free kick after a Covenant foul. Goodman pushed the Tiger lead to
2-0, when just 1:31 later, she pushed another shot past Holman,
this time off an assist by Faith Spencer. Covenant wouldn’t
stay quiet for long though, as the Scots got on the board at the 23
minute mark when Lauren Probst scored off a corner kick to make it
2-1. Faith Spencer picked up her third goal of the season when she
added a Tiger insurance goal at the 59:25 mark. Goodman and Spencer
accounted for every Tiger point of the evening. The defense held on
after Spencer’s score, as Sewanee picked up the 3-1 victory.
The Tigers finished the night with the edge in shots, 18-5, and
finished even in corner kicks, 4-4. Virginia Zakas picked up the
win in goal for the Tigers after stopping three Scot shots. Sewanee
moves to 7-5 on the year with their third straight win. The Tigers
will play host to two SCAC contests next weekend when they host
Rhodes on Friday night and Hendrix on Sunday.
Deep into conference action the Pirates of Southwestern
University won two big games this weekend as they defeated
Birmingham Southern 1-0 on Friday afternoon and Millsaps 2-0 on
Sunday. With the wins SU improves to 7-5-1 overall and 3-3 in SCAC
action. Southwestern trailed in the shot count against BSC but got
the one that mattered as Amy Douglas scored her first goal of the
season. Sunday SU pulled ahead early scoring in the 13th minute of
action and then posted one more in the second half for good
measure. The Pirate defense was sharp all weekend as they recorded
two shutouts in the games, their third and fourth of the
season. SU plays has just one game this week as they play
regional-opponent Chapman in San Antonio on Sunday at
noon.
#10 Trinity upped its win streak to 11 games after
defeating both Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern over the weekend.
The Tigers opened the weekend with a 7-0 shutout of Millsaps, which
marked the team’s fifth straight game without allowing a
goal. On Sunday, despite BSC breaking up Trinity’s
streak of not allowing any goals, the Tigers still prevailed 3-1.
Abby Loar had two goals and three assists in the win over Millsaps,
while Kelly Watts also had two goals and one assist. On
Sunday, both Watts and Loar scored goals again, and Loar collected
her fourth assist of the weekend. Trinity will remain at home this
week, but will play just one non-conference game against Chapman on
Friday night. The Tigers have met Chapman just twice since
1991, taking wins in both games (1995, 1998).
