SUWANEE, Ga. - Heading into the final weekend of the regular season in Women's Lacrosse much is still to be determined for seeding in the SCAC Tournament. Sewanee controls its own destiny holding a perfect 2-0 record in league action but Centre and Colorado College are both jostling for the top spot with 2-1 conference records.

Birmingham-Southern split this week, dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to Centre, 19-18, and rebounding with an 18-11 win against Fontbonne the next day. Against Centre, junior Chelsea Van Voorhis led with eight goals, while junior Lyndsay Griffin led with six goals against Fontbonne. The Panthers are at home this weekend to wrap up the regular season, hosting Sewanee, Friday, and Berry, Saturday, before hosting the SCAC Championships the weekend of April 22.
Centre opened play for the week at home on Friday, April 8 with an exciting conference match against Birmingham Southern, where Centre was able to pull off a 19-18 win in overtime. Centre built up a 12-4 lead in the first half of play, but the Panthers were able to come back in the second half and tie the game at 17 all. During the first overtime period Birmingham Southern was able to score first. Centre posted two goals in the second overtime period to take the win. The Colonels then faced Fontbonne at home on Sunday, April 10 and Centre was able to come away with an 18-4 win to improve to 11-3 on the season. Centre is 2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Next up for the Colonels will be a non-conference game against Fort Lewis College on Saturday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Ellie Cole scored four of her five goals during the opening
20:45 as Colorado College raced
to an 11-0 lead and coasted home with a 17-7 victory over the
University of Dallas on Saturday. Leslie Jacoby and Madeline
Scherer each struck for three goals and added an assist to help the
Tigers record their fourth consecutive victory. Hadley Bergh scored
what proved to be the first game-winning goal of her career when
she found the net 14:13 into the game. Abby Fink made four saves
for the Tigers in the first half, while Katy Stetson stopped one
shot during the final 30 minutes. Sheridan Gribbon led the Tigers
with five ground balls, had a pair of draw controls and caused two
turnovers. Sarah Phillips had four draw controls to go along with a
goal and two assists. Colorado College had a 34-14 advantage in
total shots, putting 27 on target compared to just 12 for the
Crusaders. The Tigers also enjoyed a 21-14 edge in ground balls and
won 15 of 25 faceoffs. Thirteen different players found the net at
least once as Colorado College rolled to a 23-4 victory over
Westminster College in an exhibition game on Sunday. The Tigers
play host to Division II Fort Lewis College and Centre this Friday
and Sunday, respectively.
Millsaps dropped two games in Georgia this week, falling
11-16 at Shorter on Saturday and 4-17 to Berry on Sunday. The
eleven goals against Shorter was the second-highest goal total
achieved by the Majors this season. Only their win against Agnes
Scott had more goal production with 14. Haleigh Williams led the
Majors with five goals on the day and J.B. Page added three.
Williams added two more against Berry while Page added one to her
total and Laura Gray picked up one to round out the scoring.
Madelyn Walker collected 21 saves across the two games. The Majors
will return to Harper Davis Field this weekend to host the
University of the South in the final regular season game of 2011.
Game time is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
Sewanee split a pair of non-conference match ups at home
this weekend, topping Whittier in a thriller, 14-13, on Friday,
before falling 24-14 to Adrian College on Sunday. Against the Poets
of Whittier, senior Allison Bland netted the game-winning goal with
just 2:40 left to play before junior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum stopped
a one on none fastbreak shot to preserve the win. Bland notched
four goals and three assists in the win, while Nusbaum collected 14
saves in 60 minutes of play. On Sunday, the Tigers came out on the
bottom end of a physical match up with the Bulldogs of Adrian. In a
game that netted nine yellow cards and a combined 58 fouls, the
Bulldogs overpowered the Tigers, out-shooting the hosts 41-29 and
controlling 26 of the 40 draw controls, on their way to a 24-14
win. Meg Welton led Sewanee with five goals and one assist on seven
shots, going 4-of-5 on free position shots. Nusbaum tallied 11
saves in 60 minutes of work. Sewanee moves to 10-5 on the year and
will go on the road this weekend for a pair of SCAC contests
against Birmingham-Southern College and Millsaps College Friday and
Saturday.
