GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The 25th-ranked Tigers
improved to 22-3 overall and 9-1 in the Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of visiting
Birmingham-Southern. DePauw won by scores of 4-1 and 6-1. The
Panthers dropped to 21-5 overall and 12-2 in the conference. With
the first game win, DePauw coach Bonnie Skrenta notched her 200th
career victory at DePauw in eight seasons. Her overall record
stands at 201-98-1.
Birmingham-Southern took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ronni Ferris
singled and stole second and scored on Jena Franks' single.
DePauw did all of its scoring in the fifth as Ashlee Anton led off with a walk. Sam Szyska entered as a pinch-runner and moved to second on Haley Buchanan's sacrifice bunt. Cymone Allen singled home Szyska to tie the game. Brianne Weeks reached on a fielder's choice and Rachel MacBeth followed with a single before Jen Kosinski delivered a three-run homer.
Kosinski and Emma Minx each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while six different Panthers collected one hit apiece. Megan Soultz improved to 15-2 with the win, while Ferris dropped to 11-3.
In the nightcap, Januar Page led off the game with a single and moved to second on Ferris' sacrifice bunt. Tori Harris doubled Page home. That would be Birmingham-Southern's only run of the game and its last hit.
Emma Minx singled in the second and later scored on a passed ball and she gave the Tigers the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer. DePauw added an unearned run in the inning for a 4-1 lead. In the fifth, Minx drove in two more with a single.
Minx had three of DePauw's seven hits and drove in four. Soultz improved to 16-2 with the two-hitter, while Harris dropped to 5-2.
Soultz also improved to 100-20 for her career and her win total ranks sixth in Division III history. Her 128 starts rank fifth, while her 43 shutouts are 10th.
DePauw and Birmingham-Southern wrap up the series with a Noon doubleheader tomorrow.
