Trinity Wins First SCAC Women's Cross Country Championship With Perfect Score

IRVING, Texas. -  Trinity University won its first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's cross country championship with a perfect score of 15 points, as Tiger runners finished in first through fifth place at the University of Dallas cross country course on Saturday. Trinity juniors Vanessa Moreno (23:26.02) and Maddie Murphy (2011 SCAC champion - 23:39.00)) took the top two spots while Tiger teammates Jessica Pagano (24:07.60), Rosemary Steup (24:15.41) and Jackie Newell (24:16.54) rounded out the top five finishers on the 6K course.

Moreno's 6K time was the fastest women's finish ever run on the University of Dallas course.

It marked the first-ever perfect score in SCAC women's cross country championship history and it was just the second ever perfect score in league history. The 2005 DePauw University men posted the only other perfect score in SCAC cross country history. Current Trinity head women's coach Derick Lawrence was a member of the perfect DePauw men's team in 2005.

Trinity tallied a perfect score of 15 points while Colorado College finished in second with 50 points followed by Southwestern Univeristy (third - 103 points), Dallas (fourth - 108 points), Centenary College (fifth - 180 points) and Austin College (sixth - 200 points).

With her first place finish, Moreno won 2012 SCAC Runner-of-the-Year honors. Colorado College's Jamie Peng was tabbed the SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year with her sixth place individual finish.

Trinity placed nine runners on the All-SCAC team (pictured at left - click the image for a larger view) was Jessie Dean (ninth - 24:28.61), Nicola Hill (11th - 24:57.14), Michelle Oberndorf (13th - 25:19.86) and Mariana Sigala (14th - 25:41.04) finished in the top 14.

Rounding out the All-SCAC team was Colorado College's Nikki Steinsiek (seventh - 24:24.35), Southwestern University's Lilly Duarte (eighth - 24:25.89), Colorado College's Erin Morrow (10th - 24:39.54) and teammate Mary Wang (12th - 25:17.94).

The Colorado College Tigers placed four runners on the All-SCAC team while Southwestern added one All-Conference performer. Colorado College was a distant second as the Tigers had five top-20 finishes.

Southwestern University had two runners, Duarte and Kara Koinis (16th - 25:53.63), finish in the top 20. Duarte was an All-SCAC performer in 2011.

Championship host Dallas had Clare Meyers finish in the top-20 as she was 19th with a time of 26:02.68.

Centenary College, competing in its first-ever SCAC championship, placed one runner, Rachel Olson, in the top-20. Olson finished 20th with a time of 26:26.47. She was the Ladies' only top-30 finisher.

Austin College also competed in its first-ever SCAC women's cross country championship as the Kangaroos started their program midway through the 2012 season. Austin College was led by junior Olivia Flaggert's 35th place finish. She clocked a 28:28.69 time on the challenging 6K course.

After the race, SCAC Assistant Commissioner Jeff DeBaldo caught up with the top three women's finishers as well as Trinity head coach Derick Lawrence.
