TOBY COHEN OF
COLORADO COLLEGE has been selected the SCAC
Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the
week ending March 28, 2010.
A senior midfielder and captain on the men’s lacrosse
team, Cohen is a History/Political
Science Major at Colorado College and is also working on
a Minor in Education.
Cohen has held various campus leadership
positions, including his work as co-founder and President of the
Community Yellow Bike Program at Colorado College. In this
role, Cohen spearheaded a non-profit communal
bike initiative to promote sustainable living on campus which
increased the original fleet of eight bicycles to sixteen after
receiving a $1,500 grant. He also expanded membership to over 50
students and faculty through experiential marketing tactics,
and contracted with Kinetix to headline the first annual
‘Rock for Rides’ benefit concert.
"He's the embodiment of what Colorado College hopes to have in its
student body," says his coach Guy Van Arsdale. "Someone who is
fully engaged in his academic pursuits, fully engaged in making our
community better, and is fully engaged in being a leader on an
athletic team."
Cohen also serves as secretary of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Colorado College, and is the
financial chairperson of the school's Honor Council.
Away from campus, Cohen has served as a public
achievement coach with a local middle school - helping to motivate
and engage seven students as agents of public change in order to
resolve a community-based health issue.
Cohen has also volunteered as a teaching assistant
and assistant lacrosse coach at various elementary, junior high and
high schools in the Colorado College community as well as his
hometown of Andover, Massachusetts.
