ZEKE EDWARDS
OF CENTRE COLLEGE has been selected the
SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for
the week ending April 25, 2010.
Edwards, a freshman on the Colonels' baseball
team, is a Woodson-Swain Scholar and a member of the Phi Kappa Tau
Fraternity, where he was elected IFC representative. He was
also elected a freshman representative on the Baseball
Leadership Team/Discipline Committee.
Recently, Edwards and members of his
fraternity helped build the Batewood Community Park in
Danville. The main intent of the park is to provide the
community with an atmosphere that fosters community and personal
responsibility while giving everyone a sense of ownership.
In order to get the community acclimated with these
facilities, Edwards is a part of a
committee of five in charge of putting together a kick-off
event - which will be a recreation camp the weekend of May 7-8 that
will involve a dinner, specialized teaching from Centre College
athletes in the sports of volleyball, football, basketball, and
soccer, as well as the experience of being the first group of
kids who get to use the park.
Through his fraternity, Edwards also
participated in a letter writing campaign to raise money and
awareness for our national philanthropy (Hole in the Wall Camps).
The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps leads a global family of
camps and programs that positively change the lives of children
living with serious and life-threatening medical conditions.
With the help of his fraternity, Edwards has
also volunteered to help build a horse park in Mitchellsburg,
Ky.
Edward put his baseball skills to use
by volunteering to give baseball lessons to middle school kids
through the Centre College Baseball team, and volunteered helping
with the Mercer County Senior High baseball team.
Other on-campus groups in which Edwards is a
member the Econ Society, Mathematics Club, Centre Christian
Fellowship, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
