LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University played just two games last week while splitting a double-header but it was the second game of the double-header that warranted attention. Trinity avoided being swept when they beat Division II St. Mary's (Texas), 4-3 on March 8.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College softball team split its only two
games last week against the University of the Ozarks, taking a 12-4
win in game one before falling 5-3 in game two. Sophia Hernandez
had a huge day at the plate, hitting .571 with three home runs and
six RBI, and also earned the game one victory on the mound,
allowing three earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Jessica Baker
also had a big day at the plate, hitting .714 with three runs
scored and three stolen bases. Heather Farquhar batted .625 with a
homer and two RBI and Charlotte Trudell hit .429.
Centenary dropped a doubleheader to Evangel University in
its only action of the week. The Ladies’ bats were held at
bay by the Eagles pitching staff as the squad combined for just
eight hits in the twin bill with Jessica McDonald registering the
lone multiple hit performance with a 2-for-2 effort in the second
outing. Nicole Warren, Whitney Patterson, Cadie Hancock, Lauren
Swift and Erin Crites all added hits in the double dip. Lindsey
Sconce took the loss in the both outings allowing 15 runs –
only nine earned – on 20 hits. Sconce fanned a total of five
hitters and walked four in the affairs. Centenary returns to action
on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at LSU-Alexandria. First pitch is scheduled
for 5 p.m.
Dallas (1-7) did not play this past week, but six games
are on the schedule this week in Fort Myers, Fla., at the Gene
Cusic Classic. The Crusaders will combat Wisconsin Lutheran
College, New Jersey City College, Salem College (N.C.), Olivet
College (Mich.), St. Joseph's College (N.Y.) and the University of
Pittsburgh-Bradford.
Southwestern took two games from Schreiner in Georgetown,
Texas. Schreiner scored one run in each of the first and second
games but it wasn’t enough for a win against the Pirates,
with the final scores being 6-1 and 2-1 respectively. Kelsey
Kingston pitched a total of 14 innings and struck out 20 hitters
during her outing that day. During game one, Southwestern hit the
third inning hard, scoring all six of their runs at once. The next
half inning the Mountaineers put a run on the board but
couldn’t do much else. In game two, all of the runs
were scored during the same innings, and although Schreiner put
pressure on during the whole game, it wasn’t enough to put
more than one run across the board.
Trinity earned its second consecutive split in its only
games last week, rallying to earn a win in game two against
Division II St. Mary’s University (Texas). The Tigers lost
the opening game 8-0 in five innings, but refused to go quietly in
game two. Trinity fell behind 3-1 early in the game, then rallied
for three unanswered runs to take the lead, and eventually, pull
off the upset. Trinity will host Hardin-Simmons in a doubleheader
on Tuesday afternoon, then head to Arizona for the Tucson
Invitational later in the week. The Tigers will face
Baldwin-Wallace and Central (Iowa) on Thursday, followed by games
against Chatham and Dickinson on Friday afternoon. Trinity finishes
the tournament with games against Alfred and Central (Iowa) on
Saturday.
