Colorado College’s Castaneda; Centre’s Owens lauded as 2011 SCAC Cross Country Coaches of the Year

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Colorado College's Ted Castaneda was named SCAC Men's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year and Centre College’s Lisa Owens was selected SCAC Women's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year.

Colorado College won its fourth SCAC men's cross country title in five years - led by 2011 Men's Runner-of-the-Year Jackson Brainerd, who won the individual title with a 25:46.84 finish. It marked Brainerd’s third straight individual championship, becoming just the second person to accomplish that feat in the SCAC era (since 1991). DePauw’s Graham Wellman won three consecutive individual championships from 2002-2004.

Brainerd's teammates Robby Caseria (26:05.74), Nick Hall (26:37.47), Graham Frank (26:51.70) and Kaleb Fergin (26:55.30) also posted top-14 All-SCAC times by finishing fourth, sixth, 12th and 14th, respectively. The CC Tigers finished with 57 points - 15 points ahead of DePauw University. Team & Individual Results

Two weeks later, Colorado College claimed a share of the regional championship for the first time in school history at the NCAA West Regional and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Brainerd defended his regional championship and became the first three-time regional champion in school history. At the national meet, the CC Tigers took 28th place out of 32 teams.

This marks the fourth time Castaneda has been selected as SCAC Men's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year.

Colorado College’s Nick Hall earned Newcomer-of-the-Year honors by virtue of being the top finisher among first-year runners at the conference championship meet. His time of 26:37.47 was good for sixth-place, earning him All-SCAC honors.

On the women's side, Centre College won its fifth SCAC cross country championship and first since 1994. The Colonel women narrowly squeaked by second-place Trinity University by a four point margin (50-54). Team & Individual Results

For Owens, the honor marks the first time she has been named SCAC Women's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year. It also is the first time a Centre coach has been named SCAC Women’s Cross country Coach-of-the-Year since Cheryl Hart earned the honor in 1994.

Leading the Centre women at the conference championship meet was first-year Ashley El Rady, who covered the 6-kilometer course in 22:18.84 to win place second and earn 2011 SCAC Cross Country Newcomer-of-the-Year honors as the top first-year finisher.

Centre placed three runners (El Rady – second), (Hannah Ellis – sixth) and (Bekah Rehkamp – seventh) in the top ten. Emily Akin (14th) rounded out the Colonels who earned All-SCAC honors.

Two weeks later, the Centre women earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship by finishing in third-place at the South/Southeast Region championship meet. Centre finished just six points behind Rhodes for second-place.

At the NCAA Championship, Centre finished in 31st-place (of 32 teams), a mere four points ahead of Rhodes.
