Weather Steals the Headlines at SCAC Softball Tournament

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Trinity and Centre advanced during the first day of the SCAC Softball Tournament from the campus of DePauw University. Weather became the story as the day unfolded allowing for the completion of just two of the scheduled four games. Play will resume tomorrow morning at nine with Southwestern against Trinity. Game One Recap - Trinity 3, Rhodes 0
On the strength of two homers and the one-hit pitching of Colbie Devot, Trinity advanced in the winner's bracket of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship with a 3-0 win over Rhodes. Box Score

Trinity (19-22) advanced to play Southwestern in today's 2 p.m. contest, while Rhodes (25-16) plays in tomorrow's Saturday's 11 a.m. loser's bracket game.

Lindsay Weyand it a solo homer in the second which gave Trinity a 1-0 lead. In the third, Megan Russell hit a two-run shot to make it 3-0.

Trinity totaled eight hits with Weyand finishing with two. Rhodes' lone hit came from Elise Suna in the seventh inning.

Devot struck out 12 in tossing the one-hit complete game and improved to 12-11. Sara Bowen dropped to 13-6 with the loss.

After the game SCAC Director of Communications, Russell Kramer caught up with both head coaches along with winning pitcher Colbie Devot of Trinity.

Game Two Recap - Centre 8, Millsaps 4
Centre scored once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and claim an 8-4 win over  Millsaps in the winner's bracket of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Box Score

The Colonels improved to 16-21 on the season and face DePauw on Saturday, while Millsaps dropped to 16-23 and faces the loser of Saturday's game between Trinity and Southwestern.

Millsaps took a 2-0 lead in the first as Caroline Thompson led off with a single and Allison Tarbox hit a two-out, two-run homer to center. 

Centre trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the second as Chelsea Benham hit a solo homer to left. That Majors' lead went to 3-1 in the second after Sam Wursteisen and Amanda Berry each singled and Wursteisen scored on Allyson Christian's fielder's choice grounder.

The Colonels evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth after Chelsea Collard's triple plated Taylor Childress and Katie Martello's base hit scored Collard.

In the sixth Benham led off by reaching second on a Millsaps outfield error, moving to third on Collard's sacrifice bunt and scoring on Emily Meador's double.

Centre's Regina Sena doubled in the seventh and Mary Saylor walked before Benham singled home Sena. Lightning forced the teams off the field for a delay of four hours and 49 minutes. When play resumed at 6:38 p.m., Collard walked before Martello cleared the bases with a double to center which extended the Colonels' lead to 8-3.

Millsaps added one in the seventh as Jade Hewitt walked with two outs and moved to second when Caroline Thompson  reached on an error. Megan Yglesias' infield single loaded the bases and Emily Spicer reached on an error which allowed Hewitt to score.

Centre totaled 19 hits led by Sena and Benham with three each. Childress and Martello each added two, while Martello finished with four RBI. The  Majors finished with seven hits as Thompson and Yglesias each had two.

Meador improved to 10-11 and struck out eight with just one walk, while Tyner dropped to 6-7.
