Softball Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Millsaps swept Hendrix over the weekend and has now won six of its last seven games improving to 6-2 in conference play. Megan Yglesias help lead the Majors over the weekend batting .600 in four games with nine hits, including two home runs, nine RBIs 1.200 slugging percentage with two huge game-winning hits (HR and Single).

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College went 0-4 on the week with all four losses coming on the road at conference foe Trinity. Trinity limited the ‘Roos to just five runs in the four game series. Austin College will return to action Saturday, April 2nd on the road at Hendrix.

Birmingham
Southern won their second straight conference series, defeating Rhodes in three of four games with a split on Saturday and a sweep on Sunday. Playing with only 10 players, BSC is 15-7 overall and stands at second in the East Division with a 6-2 record. The Panthers have out-scored their opponents 154-63 so far this season, and out-hit them 196-146. BSC's pitching staff, consisting of only two players, has a 2.19 ERA with 117 strikeouts and a .251 opponent batting average. The Panthers are at home again this weekend, hosting Sewanee in a four-game conference series, Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Centre
played in six games over Spring Break week and the Colonels went 2-4. The Colonels opened up action for the week on Wednesday, March 23 with a double-header against Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. During the first game Centre won handily 17-0. The Colonels led in the second game 3-1 after the third inning until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Lions scored three runs to take the 4-3 win. Centre then faced a good Covenant team on Friday, March 25 and they ended up losing both games 3-2 and 10-5 in Lookout Mountain, Ga. The Colonels were then suppose to face nationally ranked Piedmont on Saturday, March 26, but due to inclement weather the game was moved to Sunday, March 27. Centre took the first game 9-6 before dropping the second game 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Colonels are 8-10 on the season and 1-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Next up for Centre will be a double-header against Georgetown College on Wednesday, March 30 with the first game starting at 5:30 p.m.

DePauw posted a 5-1-1 record during the week and stands at 12-2-1 on the season. The week started with a 1-0 win at LaGrange in 10 innings before a doubleheader split at Piedmont (1-7, 7-5). The Tigers then handed top-ranked Emory its first loss of the season in the opening game of a doubleheader, 7-6, while the second game ended in a 9-9 tie when the contest was suspended after 10 innings due to darkness. DePauw then swept a twinbill at Sewanee by scores of 10-4 and 18-1. The final doubleheader at Sewanee was canceled due to field conditions. For the week, DePauw hit .355 with a .46 slugging percentage. Rachel MacBeth led the way with a .519 (14-27) batting average and Brianne Weeks followed at .444 (12-27). Haley Buchanan and Jen Kosinski each hit two homers and Buchanan drove in 10. in the second game at Sewanee, Buchanan tied a school single-game record with two homers and seven RBI. Emily Bichler posted a  4-1 record in six starts in the circle.

Hendrix
played eight games in the seven-day span and finished with a 2-6 record after wins over MacMurray and Illinois on March 23 and 24.  The Warriors dropped two at Westminster (Mo.) and finished the week with four-straight setbacks at SCAC West foe Millsaps on Saturday and Sunday.  Hendrix now stands at 8-18 on the year and 0-8 in league action.  Westminster handed Hendrix a pair of one-run losses, 10-9 and 11-10, while the Warriors cruised to mercy-rule victories against MacMurray (12-0) and Illinois (15-3). Millsaps held Hendrix to just 10 hits in two games to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon.  The Majors took a walk-off 4-3 win in the opener and then a 4-1 decision in the night cap.  On Saturday, Hendrix fought back from an early 4-0 deficit to own an 8-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.  The Warriors scored three runs in the seventh on a one-run triple, one-run single and a wild pitch.  Millsaps junior Jade Hewitt then smashed a walk-off three run homer to center field in the Majors’ final at bat with two outs.  The Warriors saw another lead slip away in Saturday’s night cap as the Majors erased a 6-3 deficit with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth.  Yglesias highlighted the rally with a three-run bomb to left field.  The Majors added their last two runs in the sixth as the Warriors were held scoreless over the last three innings.

Millsaps
(8-16, 6-2 SCAC) got the four-game sweep of the Warriors this weekend to move four games over .500 in conference play. Jade Hewitt led the Majors’ offense in the series-opener with four RBI in the 9-8 win. Three of those four came in the games’ final at-bat as Hewitt clinched the win with a three-run blast to center. Megan Yglesias stepped up in game two, adding three runs in the six-run fourth, in the 11-6 win. Yglesias got her second home run of the day with a three-run shot to left that helped the Majors get a little distance from the Warriors. Sunday’s games were pushed due to stormy weather dampening conditions at Millsaps Field, but the double header was played despite the soggy, chilly conditions. The weather definitely impacted the run production on both sides as the games were decided 4-3 and 4-1 in favor of the Majors. Yglesias broke up the 3-3 tie in the seventh of game one with a single past the shortstop to plate Sam Wursteisen in her second game-winning hit of the weekend. Then in the series finale, Millsaps scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh for the come-from-behind win to take the series 4-0. Lindsey Drane performed brilliantly in the final three innings, getting the Warriors in order in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to get her second win of the series. The Majors will hit the road this weekend to take on Rust College for a Saturday double header in Holly Springs.

Rhodes
went 1-3 against Birmingham Southern this weekend.  After dropping game one by a score of 3-1, the Lynx scored 3 in the 7th and two in the 8th to earn an 8-6 win in game two.  Freshman Courtney Williams hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 8th to secure the win for the Lynx. Sara Bowen picked up her 10th win of the season in relief.  On Sunday, Birmingham Southern turned the tables on the Lynx, scoring in the bottom of the 8th to earn a 5-4 win in game one, then holding off a Lynx rally in game two to win 5-4 and complete the doubleheader sweep.   Williams led the Lynx offense all weekend, going 8-for-11 with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs scored, four RBI and five walks.  She posted a .727 batting average and .813 on base percentage.

Sewanee
dropped all four of its’ games this week, falling in a doubleheader with Judson College on Wednesday, 12-3 and 18-5, before losing a pair of SCAC contests to DePauw University, 10-4 and 18-1, on Friday. Against DePauw, the Indiana Tigers jumped out a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning before Sewanee was able to draw within one with a pair of runs. DePauw added two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to go ahead 10-3, before the Tigers added another run in the bottom of the seventh. In game two, DePauw scored seven runs in the top of the first to cruise to an 18-1 victory. Sewanee’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the first when Dana Middleton doubled and advanced to third on an error. Erin Polena gounded out to second, scoring Middleton. Michelle Thibodeaux was charged with a pair of losses on the mound. Dana Middleton went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Thibodeaux led the Tigers at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort in the second game. Sewanee is now 0-2 in conference play and 2-4 overall. The Tigers will host Hiwassee College in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.

Southwestern had an off week from conference action and play two games at home against the University of Dallas on Saturday. SU made quick work of the games, finishing both in five innings. They scored 31 runs in the two games and held UD scoreless. The Southwestern pitching staff was sensational on the mound with Lyndsy Maus posting a one-hitter and allowing just two baserunners. Lauren Zearfoss followed with a one hitter as well in game two. The Pirates sit at 18-10 overall and remain at 4-0 in the conference. They return to SCAC action to face conference-rival Trinity for a four game series starting on Saturday at 1pm.

Trinity
had its best week of the season, going 4-2 overall, and sweeping its SCAC series against Austin College over the weekend. The Tigers lost both games of a Friday doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons. Trinity moved into a tie for first place in the SCAC West Division with the four conference wins, drawing even with Southwestern. The Tigers and Pirates will play a four-game weekend series this weekend in Georgetown. Before leaving for the road trip, though, Trinity takes on Our Lady of the Lake University in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
