ERIN BEGLE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a senior shortstop from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Softball Offensive Player of the Week for games played Monday, March 21st through Sunday, March 27th.
Begle continued her solid month of March with another huge week, which included the go-ahead RBI in two games Saturday. That production helped secure a 3-1 series win over Southwestern University. The results of that series flipped the squads in the standings, improving Dallas to third. Overall, the Lady Crusaders went 5-2 on the week, splitting at University of Texas at Dallas in a non-conference twinbill on Tuesday.
Begle boasted seven of her eight hits for extra bases in the conference series with six doubles and a game-winning, walk-off homer for UD's lone run in game one on Saturday. With Dallas trailing by as many as four runs, Begle sent her fifth double (at the time) of the weekend to drive in the game-tying and go-ahead runs. She added another pair of insurance runs with her final two-bagger of the series. The walk-off home run was her second time to go yard this week lifting her atop of the team in that category with three. Her three-run shot at UT-Dallas proved to be a difference-maker, as the team won by two runs.
Begle's final slash line this week was .500/524/1.100 overall and .615/.615/1.308 in conference. The shortstop recorded at least one hit in each contest, as she matched her career-long, nine-game hitting streak. She has reached base via a hit in 18 or 19 contests this month.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior infielder Berkeley Bacon of Southwestern University went 5-6 on day one of the series against Dallas with two doubles and four runs scored. Senior first baseman Taylor Yancey of Texas Lutheran hit .583, belted a two-run homer and drove in five total as the Bulldogs swept a four-game SCAC series from Centenary. Junior first baseman Katie Golmb of Trinity hit .750 (3-4) overall, and led the Tigers with four RBI during her limited action.
