Women's Basketball Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Sweeps were the order of the weekend, led by SCAC leader Trinity University (8-1 SCAC; 16-4 overall) as the current top four teams each went 2-0 in conference play. In Saturday's 113-47 victory over Colorado College, Trinity scored the most points every scored by a SCAC women's team in a regulation conference game and the second-most all-time. Texas Lutheran (7-2; 15-5 overall) remains a game back of the Tigers while Schreiner and Southwestern are both two game back at 6-3 in SCAC play.

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College dropped both of its games last week, falling 74-64 to Schreiner and 88-67 against Texas Lutheran. Erin Riley averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds and Brittany Stepanski averaged 13.5 points for the weekend to lead the 'Roos offensively. Riley had 12 points and six boards in the loss to Schreiner and added 16, hitting 4-of-7 threes, against Texas Lutheran. Stepanski led the way with 17 against the Bulldogs as TLU caught fire from long range in the second half to blow open what had been just a seven point game at halftime. Briana Harvey had 10 points in the loss to the Bulldogs.

Centenary
had three players average double figures this weekend with Rhonda Martin leading the way with 12.5 points for the two games. DeiAnna Hall added 11.5 points with Lizzie Moran at 10.0 points per game. Briana Edwards, who just finished double figures in scoring with 8.0 points, claimed her eighth double-double of the season against Schreiner with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Ladies continue to search for their first win of the season as they open a five-game homestand on Tuesday against Austin College at 8 p.m.

Colorado College
dropped a pair of road games despite a pair of impressive performances by sophomore forward Danielle Davis. On Friday night at Southwestern, Davis connected on nine of 11 field-goal attempts and added a pair of free throws en route to a career-high 20 points. Unfortunately, the Pirates had three players finish with double-digit points and pulled away for an 82-58 victory. Sophomore guard Katie Waters finished with nine points and eight rebounds for CC, while freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick also chipped in with nine points. The Tigers used a 5-0 run to pull to within nine points after 20 minutes, but Southwestern began the second half with a 15-4 spurt to end any hopes of a CC comeback. On Saturday at Trinity, Davis finished a career high 21 points, but Colorado College was no match for first-place Tigers who ran up a 113-47 victory. Davis made seven of 16 shots from the floor and seven of eight free-throw attempts. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Ukasick finished with nine points and six rebounds. CC plays host to Schreiner and Texas Lutheran on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Dallas
went 0-2 on the week in two conference road contests. On Friday, in San Antonio, the Lady Crusaders were bested 68-58 by Trinity. On Saturday, in Georgetown, Texas, head coach Jina Johansen's squad lost 76-45 to Southwestern. Dallas hosts two conference opponents this week -- Texas Lutheran (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Schreiner (Sunday, 2 p.m.).

Schreiner
went 2-0 during the week with home wins over Austin College (74-64) and Centenary (73-59). Statistical leaders for Schreiner are SCAC leader points leader Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.6 ppg/7.2 rpg), Sophomore guard Kelsie Jackson (14.4 ppg), and Senior Bailey Harris (10.2 ppg). Schreiner will travel this week to Colorado College (Friday, February 7th) and Dallas (Saturday, February 9th).

Southwestern
had a big week at home to move into a tie for third place in the conference. Colorado College put up a good fight early in the game on Friday night, but SU was just too deep as they defeated the Tigers 82-58. Saturday Southwestern had a huge offensive night including a pair of double-doubles from Chelsea Leeder and Annie Bourne to defeat the University of Dallas 76-45. Now 10-10 on the year and 6-3 in the SCAC, Southwestern heads to face Austin College and Centenary on the road this week.

Texas Lutheran
pushed its overall win streak to six and its conference streak to six with a pair of home victories, against Centenary and Austin College, over the weekend. The Bulldogs held Centenary to 27.4 percent shooting from the floor and to 4-for-18 from the three-point line. Sixteen different Bulldogs scored. TLU led 48-24 at the half and by as many as 31 in the second half. Against Austin College, the Bulldogs scored 53 points in the second half and hit nine second-half threes. TLU made a total of 13 three-pointers, matching a season-high. The Bulldogs made 50 percent from beyond the arc, making 13 of the 26 three-point attempts. The Bulldogs' 88 points tied for the third most points scored by the team this season. TLU's 15 wins are the most in a season by a women's basketball squad since the 1998-99 team won 15. 

Trinity
maintained its lead in the SCAC standings with a pair of wins over the weekend against the University of Dallas and Colorado College. The weekend marked the final regular season home games for the Tigers, who finish with a 10-3 home record. Trinity pulled away with a 14-2 run late in the game to take a 68-58 win over Dallas on Friday, then opened with a 23-3 spurt on its way to a season-high in scoring with a 113-47 win over Colorado on Saturday. Murphy Burns notched her fourth career 30-point game, hitting 10-17 shots to reach 33 points against Colorado. Allison Staley also knocked down 6-7 three-point shots to score 22 off the bench for the Tigers. Against Dallas, Hannah Coley scored 24 points on 9-12 shooting to pace Trinity, while Anecia Richardson (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Libby Kruse (10 points, 13 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles in the win. Trinity will be on the road for a pair of rematches in SCAC play this weekend, including a matchup against the only conference team to beat the Tigers so far this season. Trinity opens with a game against Centenary on Friday – a team the Tigers beat 97-39 in San Antonio. The big rematch comes Saturday night at Austin College, as Trinity hopes to avenge a 68-78 loss to the 'Roos earlier this year.
