LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The SCAC office today announced the men's and women's brackets for the 2018 basketball tournament, which will be begin Friday, Feb. 23 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Men's Tournament Bracket | Women's Tournament Bracket | Official Tournament Website
The seeds for this year's men's tournament is as follows:
1) Schreiner (10-4 SCAC; 13-12 overall)
2) Centenary (8-6 SCAC; 14-10 overall)
3) Dallas (8-6 SCAC; 15-10 overall)
4) Trinity (8-6 SCAC; 14-11 overall)
5) Colorado College (7-7 SCAC; 12-13 overall)
6) Texas Lutheran (7-7 SCAC; 11-14 overall)
The seeds for this year's women's tournament is as follows:
1) Trinity (13-1 SCAC; 21-3 overall)
2) Austin College (13-1 SCAC; 20-5 overall)
3) Southwestern (8-6 SCAC; 12-13 overall)
4) Colorado College (6-8 SCAC; 9-16 overall)
5) Centenary (5-9 overall; 8-17 overall)
6) Schreiner (4-10 overall; 6-19 overall)
It is the second consecutive year the Schreiner men have earned the No. 1 seed and the SCAC regular season title. The Mountaineers dropped an 83-70 to Texas Lutheran in the 2017 title game.
Continuing down the men's bracket, Centenary College, University of Dallas and Trinity University all tied for second place at 8-6 in the standings. Centenary College earned the tiebreaker edge and the No. 2 seed in the tournament by virtue of its better cumulative head-to-head mark against the other two. Centenary was a combined 3-1 against Dallas and Trinity which bested Dallas' combined 2-2 record and Trinity's 1-3 mark.
Once Centenary differentiated itself as the No. 2 seed, the tiebreaker between Dallas and Trinity reverted back to head-to-head comparisons. Since the two split their games this season, the next tiebreaker (working down the standings) was applied and by virtue of its better mark against the top seed Schriener (2-0 vs. 1-1), University of Dallas earned the No. 3 seed and placed Trinity in the No. 4 position.
The last two teams in the tournament, Colorado College and Texas Lutheran, both finished 7-7 in league play. Since the two split their regular season series, Colorado College earned the tiebraker nod and No. 5 seed by virtue of its better mark against the top seed, Schreiner. CC was 1-1 against Schreiner while TLU was swept by the Mountaineers.
Men's quarterfinal action gets underway at Noon MT Friday afternoon.
On the women's side, Austin College and Trinity Univesity finished in a tie atop the standings at 13-1. Since the two split their head-to-head match-ups and had no other losses in league play – neither head-to-head results nor working down the standings broke the tie. The third tiebreaker, results vs. common non-conference opponents at similar (home-away) site, could not break the tie either as the only common same site opponent was UT-Tyler and both won that game. Therefore, a coin toss was used to determine the No. 1 and No. 2 seed. The coin toss was conducted Saturday evening following the SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships with representatives from both schools present. Trinity won the coin toss and will be the No. 1 seed and Austin College will be the No. 2 seed. Both will be recognized as co-regular season champions.
It is the third consecutive year the Trinity women have been the #1 seed and the Tigers have won the SCAC title each of the previous two years in that position including last year's 78-67 tournament-clinching win over Texas Lutheran.
The last tiebreaker in the women's standings was for the sixth and final slot in the tournament between Schreiner and Texas Lutheran, who both finished 4-10. The two split their regular season contests, and when working down the standings, both went 0-2 against both Trinity and Austin College. Schreiner, however, went 1-1 against Southwestern while Texas Lutheran went 0-2, giving Schreiner the tiebreaker and the sixth and final tournament position.
