- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College ran
its winning streak to 10 games with a pair of victories over
Oglethorpe and Sewanee over the weekend, bringing the team to 14-3
overall and 8-1 in conference play. The ’Roos opened the
weekend with a 78-58 win over Oglethorpe behind 18 points and 11
rebounds from Katy Williams, who hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor.
Kersti Marusich added 19 points coming off the bench and Kayla
Redden hit 3-of-6 threes on her way to 13 points. Austin College
shot 50.8% from the field as a team in the game. Williams had a
huge game on the glass in a 76-72 win over Sewanee, grabbing 21
rebounds to go along with 16 points. The 21 rebounds are the second
highest single game total of her career. Marusich hit 3-of-4 from
deep on her way to 15 points, Shayna Clardy added 14, Redden hit
four threes and finished with 12 and Amber Stafford scored 11
points and added four assists in the victory. The ’Roos are
back home this weekend when they host DePauw and Centre.
Birmingham-Southern split this weekend at home,
the first time that the team has played in Bill Battle since Dec.
13, 2009. BSC lost to Hendrix College, 70-65, Friday, and defeated
Millsaps College, 87-40, Sunday. Against Millasps, the Panthers
broke the single-game rebounding record with 68 boards. Junior
Katelyn Wilson led BSC against Hendrix with 13 points, and freshman
Caroline King led with 11 points against Millsaps. Freshman Alex
Adams pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in each game, and
sophomore Erin Jackson posted two blocks in each contest.
Centre split a pair of SCAC games for the second
consecutive weekend falling to Trinity 70-60 Friday and then
defeating Southwestern 80-50 Saturday. Trailing by three points
(36-33) at halftime after shooting only 37.9% (11-29) in the first
half, the Colonels shot only 30.3% (10-33) in the second half to
fall to the Tigers by 10 points. The very next night, sophomore
guard Maggie Prewitt set a Centre single-game scoring record with
37 points, including 28 in the first half, to help lead the
Colonels to a convincing 80-50 win over Southwestern. Centre, now
11-6 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC will travel to Colorado and Austin
this week.
Colorado College overcame a 13-point deficit
during the final 6:23 to defeat Sewanee, 83-82, on Friday night.
Becky Luetjen scored two of her game-high 26 points with 55 seconds
remaining to give CC an 83-80 lead. UOS led 73-60, but the Tigers
used a 23-7 run to build a three-point lead with just a minute to
play. Luetjen completed her seventh double-double of the season
with 11 rebounds and added four steals. Laura Glen posted her first
career double-double with career highs of 10 points and 15
rebounds. Alyssa Aldaz finished with 14 points, while Collier Clegg
added 13 more. CC finished with a 54-39 advantage in rebounds and
shot .514 from the floor in the second half. Colorado College
overcame a 10-point deficit with seven minutes remaining, but
couldn’t get a pair of three pointers to drop in the final 16
seconds and dropped an 83-80 decision at Oglethorpe on Sunday
afternoon. Aldaz poured in 22 points, but her desperation shot from
behind the arc wouldn’t go down. Luetjen also finished with
22 points and added career-highs with seven blocks and five steals.
The Tigers play host to a pair of special events this weekend.
Friday’s game against Centre will be CC’s Pink Zone,
while the Tigers celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day
in conjunction with Saturday’s game against DePauw.
DePauw improved to 15- 3 overall, 8-1 in the SCAC
and extended its win streak to 11 with wins over Southwestern
(67-38) and Trinity (83-56). DePauw scored the game's first six
points and never trailed on the way to a 29-11 halftime lead. They
then opened the second half with a 9-0 run and stretched the lead
to 27. Katie Mathews led the Tigers with 15, while Jenna Fernandez
followed with 10. Fernandez, Emily Marshall, Ellie Pearson and
Danielle Boraz each grabbed seven rebounds as the Tigers held a
47-26 margin on the boards and hauled down 20 offensive rebounds.
Against Trinity, DePauw never trailed and took a 42-31 lead into
the intermission. Trinity was within nine at 46-37 before DePauw
scored the next 12 and 18 of the next 21 to pull away. Brooke
Osborne and Marshall each scored 14 in DePauw's winning effort.
Marshall grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Tigers held a
46-25 edge on the boards. Osborne and Mathews each dished out four
assists. With the wins, DePauw extended its home win streak to 46
straight and its string of consecutive home regular season
victories to 63. DePauw has also now won 51 straight SCAC home
games. DePauw shot 45.3 percent from the floor to Trinity's 35.3
percent and held a 25-8 advantage in second chance points. For the
weekend, the Tigers outscored their opponents by an average of
75-47 and held a +21.0 rebound margin per game.
Hendrix picked up a pair of SCAC wins over the
weekend against Birmingham-Southern on Friday night, 70-65, and
Rhodes on Sunday afternoon, 71-69. The Warriors’ 12-3 overall
record is their best through 15 games since going 13-2 in 2006-07
and their 7-2 conference mark ranks them second in the SCAC West
Division. Hendrix College senior forward Christina Byler scored 20
points and sophomore guard Anna Roane added 14, as the Warriors
edged Birmingham-Southern Friday night at the Bill Battle Coliseum.
Hendrix led the entire game and a 7-0 run over a 1:36 span put
Hendrix up by a game-high 14 points, 24-10, with 8:26 left in the
first half. The Warriors scored 20 points off the Panthers’
10 first-half turnovers and took a 33-27 lead into the break.
Hendrix stretched its advantage to 11 points, 55-44, with 9:21 left
in regulation, however, Birmingham-Southern caught fire and went on
a 13-2 run to knot the game at 57-57 with 5:43 to go. The score was
tied once more at 61-61 with 4:02 on the clock. The Warriors were
clutch from the free-throw line the rest of the way with 9-of-10
shooting. Four free throws from sophomore guard Samantha Devlin in
the final minute sealed the deal. Rhodes chipped away at a 17-point
deficit in the second half and tied the game with 30 seconds left,
until Hendrix head coach Thad McCracken used a timeout with 21
ticks to go to draw up a game-winning play. Senior forward Chelsey
White found Byler open for a layup with 2.9 seconds on the clock to
give the Warriors a big win on Sunday at Mallory-Hyde Gymnasium.
Senior guard Amanda Morris put the Warriors up by 17 on a 3-pointer
from sophomore guard Avery Roller with 15:23 left in regulation.
Rhodes answered with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to
make it a six-point game. Hendrix led by seven points, 69-62, with
1:47 to go until Rhodes used four straight free throws and an old
fashioned 3-point play to tie the game with 31 seconds left. The
Lynx led once in the entire game when junior guard Lakeya McGill
hit a jumper just two minutes into the first half. Hendrix
outscored Rhodes, 16-2, off the bench and outrebounded the Lynx,
40-32.
Millsaps hit the road
for a pair of conference games and were defeated by both Rhodes
College and Birmingham-Southern College to fall to 0-18 overall and
0-9 in the SCAC. Committing a season low 11 turnovers was not
enough for the injury plagued Majors as they fell Friday night at
Rhodes, 65-54. With only six players healthy and dressed, Millsaps
outscored the Lynx in the second half but could not overcome a
13-point halftime deficit. Sunday afternoon, the Majors faced a
sharp-shooting Panthers team from Birmingham-Southern and remained
winless on the season falling, 87-40. Millsaps shot a season-low
23.3 percent –14-for-60 – from the floor and could not
control the glass as BSC out-rebounded the Majors 64-21. This
weekend, Sewanee University and Oglethorpe University travel to
Jackson to take on Millsaps Friday night at 6 p.m. and Sunday
afternoon at 1 p.m.
Oglethorpe split a pair of home SCAC contests this
past weekend, falling to Austin College (78-58) on Friday and
topping Colorado College (83-80) on Sunday. Austin connected on 33
of 65 attempts for 51% while Oglethorpe struggled shooting 20-62
for 32% in earning the win over the Petrels. Mareva Bone returned
to the lineup after a lengthy hiatus with injury and led all
Petrels with 11 points on the night. Eleven of the healthy twelve
women on the roster managed to score on the evening with Sarah
Giles narrowly missing a double-double with 9 points and 14
rebounds. Against Colorado College, the Petrels snapped a five game
losing streak to get back into the win column. The Petrels took
control of the contest in the first half by holding the Tigers to
22.7% shooting from the field and Oglethorpe was able to open up a
10 point lead and then head into the locker room with an 8-point
37-29 advantage. The Tigers stormed back on two separate occasions
in the second half to take a lead over Oglethorpe but head coach
Ron Sattele's squad showed fortitude by rallying each time to push
the Tigers away. Colorado College tied the game at 80 apiece with
less than 40 seconds to play before fouling freshman Riley Cerone
with 27 ticks left. The freshman stepped to the line and calmly
nailed two free throws to give Oglethorpe a two point lead. With
the results Oglethorpe is now 8-10 on the season and 3-6 in SCAC
play. The Petrels are back in action this Friday when they face
Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
Hendrix forward Christina Byler made a four foot jumper with 2.9
seconds to play to lift the Warriors to a 71-69 SCAC win over
Rhodes in Mallory Gymnasium on January 24th.
Byler's jumper negated a Lynx second half comeback that saw Rhodes
rally from a 17 point deficit to tie the game at 69-69 with 31
seconds to play. Senior Becky Atnip converted a conventional three
point play on a 17 foot jump shot and a Hendrix foul by Samantha
Devlin. The Lynx were led by Jenilee Pate's 22 points and LaKeya
McGill added a season high 20 points. The Warriors seemed in
control after Amanda Morris knocked down a three point shot to give
Hendrix a 50-33 lead with 15:23 to play. However, the Lynx fought
back with a 11-0 run to cut the margin to 50-44 on a McGill layup
with 11:47 to play. A three point basket by Hendrix guard Anna
Roane gave the Warriors a 69-62 lead with 1:47 to play. The Lynx
would go on a 7-0 run over the next 1:16 to tie the game at 69-69
before the Warriors scored on their final possesion for the
victory. Rhodes falls to 10-8 on the season, Hendrix improves to
12-3.
Sewanee nearly pulled two upsets this weekend,
leading both Colorado and Austin at halftime. The visitors rallied
each time, though, and the Tigers took narrow losses in both games.
Lauren Gulley and Christina Johnson each had 15 in Friday's game,
while senior Kelly Morrison led Sewane with 23 points on Sunday. In
keeping with their national ranking in both categories, the Tigers
had 24 steals and 21 three-pointers on the weekend. Sewanee is now
5-12 and 1-8 in the SCAC. The Tigers will play at Millsaps and
Hendrix this weekend.
Southwestern continued to struggle on the road as
they dropped two road contests this week to fall to 8-10 overall
and 4-5 in the SCAC. In both contests the Pirates struggled from
the floor shooting just 29.1% from the floor over the two games.
Southwestern returns home this weekend to begin a four-game home
stand. This season Southwestern is an impressive 7-2 at home and
look to continue to defend their home court. They face Rhodes
College on Friday night at 6:00 pm and Birmingham Southern on
Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
Trinity split a pair of road games at Centre and
DePauw over the weekend, defeating Centre 70-60 on Friday night,
but falling 56-83 to DePauw on Saturday. The Tigers were led by
three players averaging in double figures over the weekend,
including a team-high 15.0 points/game from Ali Marzella. Abby
Dietert led the team with 7.5 rebounds/game to go with her 12.0
points/game in the two games, while Danielle Hubenak chipped in
with 10.5 points/game and hit 3-7 from three-point range. With
Hubenak’s 21 points scored, she moves into 18th place in
Trinity history, eclipsing the 800-point barrier over the weekend.
Additionally, she is on the verge of breaking an 11-year-old record
for career assists. Hubenak needs just five more assists to break
the school record of 295 assists, set by Christal Seahorn from
1995-99. Marzella, who leads the team with 30 three-pointers this
season, is now just 13 away from becoming the second player in
school history to score 100 or more three-point field goals in a
career. She would need 19 more threes to break the school record,
currently held Kim Sayles (1998-2002). Alexandra Blake remains
poised for a milestone of her own, needing just three rebounds to
reach 400 in her career. Only 13 Tiger women’s basketball
players have ever reached 500 career rebounds. Trinity hosts
Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes this weekend, opening up a stretch
of four straight home games for the Tigers. Last season, Trinity
split with these two teams on the road. The Tigers defeated BSC
76-67, but lost 58-64 to Rhodes.
