LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- All four of the men's lacrosse teams were in action this past week, highlighted by Colorado College's head coach Sean Woods posting his 100th career victory.
Woods recorded victory No. 100 at Colorado College as the Tigers pulled away from CSU Pueblo in the second half for an 18-8 victory on Monday night. Declan Maguire and Dylan Brown scored two goals each and freshman goaltender Ben Anastos made a season-high 18 saves in a little more than 55 minutes. CC utilized a strong defensive effort late in the game to preserve a 10-8 victory at St. Mary's College of Maryland and improve to 5-0 on Friday afternoon. The Tigers man-down unit killed a 30-second penalty and caused a turnover with 1:22 remaining to seal the victory. John Lawrence picked up a game-high five ground balls while Isaac Atencio and Bill Hutchison each recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover to lead the CC defense. Colorado College dropped its first game of the season on Sunday, falling to No. 4 Salisbury University, 19-3, to complete the first of three trips to the East Coast. Anastos stopped 14 shots, but the CC offense was unable to solve the Salisbury defense. Brown and Anders Erickson led the Tigers with six shots apiece. Jack Haims recorded two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Southwestern split a pair of one goal games, defeating Illinois Wesleyan, 11-10 on Friday before falling by the same score to Benedictine (Ill.) on Sunday. In Friday's win, sophomore Blake Sitterly became the first Southwestern goalkeeper to score a goal, nailing the game-winner against Illinois Wesleyan. Sitterly, advancing the ball after an errant IWU pass went out of bounds, scanned the field as the first line of defense came to greet him. Noticing the Illinois Wesleyan goalkeeper marking a Southwestern player away from the net, Sitterly heaved the ball the length of the field, finding the back of the empty net off one bounce for the improbable goal to give the Pirates an 11-9 lead with 4:42 remaining. The win was Southwestern's first over an NCAA Tournament team in program history. The Pirates surrendered the final four goals of the game, including three in the fourth quarter, to lose 11-10 to Benedictine on Sunday. Tyler Johnson led the Pirates with three goals and Jack Carolan and Zac Asbury each had two goals and an assist. Hudson Bearden won 14-of-21 faceoff opportunities and had six groundballs. Sitterly finished with 12 saves in the loss.
Both Centenary and Dallas dropped their only matches of the week with Centenary losing 20-3 to Hendrix on Thursday and Dallas dropping a 19-8 decision to Huntingdon (Ala.) on Friday.
