2013 SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament - Preview

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Trinity University looks to make it two in a row, but the competition is looking to end those dreams, as six SCAC institutions will compete at this weekend's SCAC Men's Soccer Championship. Official Tournament Website | Bracket

The 2013 event will be held Friday-Sunday, November 8-10 on the campus of Southwestern University.

Trinity enters as the No. 1 seed as they knocked off Southwestern in their final game of the season to claim the ranking. They defeated the Pirates a year ago, 2-0, to earn their 15th SCAC Title.

The seventh-ranked Tigers (13-1-0 SCAC / 16-2-1 overall) are led by a prolific offense that has scored 80 goals on the season. It starts with junior Jonny Lawson, who leads the team in both goals and points. Lawson has produced 13 goals (three game-winners) and six assists for 32 points. Senior All-America Yuri Ribeiro has chalked up 31 points, with nine goals (one game-winner), and a team-leading 13 assists. Junior Victor Araujo has 28 points, with 10 goals (a team-high four game-winners), and eight assists.  Matt Cardone, a junior goalkeeper, and 2011 SCAC Newcomer of the Year, has allowed only seven goals (.46 per game), while registering 35 saves. A defensive stalwart is sophomore defender Tom Carwile, who was the 2012 SCAC Newcomer of the Year. In addition to helping guide the Tigers to 13 shutout victories this season, including five in a row coming into this weekend, Carwile has scored seven goals, with three game-winners.

Southwestern University comes in as the No. 2 seed as they look to defend their home turf. The Pirates (11-2-1 SCAC / 13-6-1) have had a historic season including an upset with over Trinity in San Antonio earlier in the year. Senior Steven Resnik leads the team in points (17) as well as goals scored (8) in 2013. Meanwhile, senior Matthew Nickell and freshman Michael Oliveras each have 13 totals point while scoring four goals and contributing five assissts. Senior Timothy Eamma leads the team with six assists (third in the SCAC) while junior Zach Faulkner chips in with four goals and four assists. The Pirate defense has been solid all year as they are led by Nickell and senior goalkeeper Daniel Poole. Poole set a school record earlier this year with 15 saves in a shutout win vs. Trinity and finished the year with 89 saves (second in teh SCAC), six shutout, and a 0.95 GAA. 

A team that made a NCAA appearance a year ago, Colorado College, enters Friday as thy No. 3 seed. The Tigers (11-3 SCAC / 13-5-2) are led by senior Brandon Ogilvie, the SCAC leading scorer in points and goals with 33 and 14. He is joined by freshman Caden MacKenzie who has six goals on the season to go with a pair of assists while sophomore Seth Newbury adds five goals and three assists. Senior Andrew Salazar leads the Tigers with seven assists to go with three goals on the year and senior Sean Parham has four goals and four assists in 2013. Sophomore Ian Horne is in net for the Tigers, picking up 40 saves on the year to go with seven shutouts to lead a tough Tiger defense into Georgetown.

The Bulldogs of Texas Lutheran University come into Georgetown as the No. 4 seed. The Bulldogs (7-7 SCAC / 10-7) will compete in their first ever SCAC Tournament Game after making the move from the ASC in 2013. Texas Lutheran has a pair of goal scorers looking to make a splash in sophomore Isaac Lopez, who leads the team with 12 points including five goals, and sophomore Lalo Ramirez, who also leads the team with five goal on the year. Freshman Alejandro Martinez adds four goals and two assists while freshman Colin Nunley has two goals and three assists on the year. Defensively, sophomore Jonathan Michael had 71 saves and seven shutouts to lead TLU on the season.

Another school made a move over to the ASC in 2013 and will make their first SCAC Tournament appearance in No. 5 Schreiner University. The Mountaineers (4-8-2 SCAC / 4-12-3) are led by the eletric Ryan Hernandez, who had five goals on the year to go with two assists. Junior Justin Edwards also poses a threat offensively with four goals and a team leading three assists. Defensively, Schreiner is led by freshman Blake Lawson with 85 saves (third in the SCAC) in goal as well as four shutouts. 

Austin College rounds out the field as the No. 6 seed. The 'Roos (4-8-2 SCAC / 4-12-3) have struggled offensively on the year, but are led by sophomore Caleb Walters with two goals and one assist. Junior Daniel Graham adds a goal and three assists to lead the team in points (5) while junior Andrew Parides adds two goals to share the lead. Defensively, the 'Roos shine and are led by junior Andrew Celio, the SCAC leader in saves (95). Celio also adds five shutouts on the year and a .780 save percentage.
