Men's Soccer Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University pulled off a huge upset over No. 10 Trinity, their first over the Tigers since joining the SCAC in 1994. The win gives the Pirates a 1-0 start in the SCAC while Austin College, Colorado College, and Texas Lutheran University all picked up opening SCAC victories.

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College men's soccer team went 1-1 last week, topping Centenary 1-0 for the team's first win this season before falling 3-0 to the University of Texas-Dallas. The 'Roos are now 1-3-1 overall this season. Against Centenary, Joey Alcocer tallied the game's lone goal to give the 'Roos the victory and Ian Allison posted a shutout in his first career start, making eight saves in the match. Allison carried his scoreless streak into the UTD game, conceding zero goals in the first half. UTD would score three goals in the second half to hand the 'Roos the loss. This week the 'Roos get back into conference play when they travel to Colorado College and the University of Dallas.

Centenary went 0-3 on the week with losses to Austin College, Hendrix and Rhodes. The Gents tallied two goals on the week, but were outscored 9-2. Chris Berrios posted a goal and an assist on the week to lead the Gents in points while Jeremy Klespis also tallied a goal for the Maroon and White. Austin Andrews, Rylan Whan and Chase Duet each saw time in net for the Gents combing for 17 saves in the three losses. Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 as the Gents host LeTourneau at 7 p.m.

Colorado College remained undefeated at home by recording a 1-1 tie against Chapman University and a 3-1 victory over the University of Dallas. Sophomore midfielder Seth Newby struck for the first tally of his collegiate career late in the first half, heading a cross from freshman midfielder Caden MacKenzie over and past the CU keeper's outstretched arms put CC up 1-0 lead at Washburn Field. It was the first collegiate point for both players. Despite being outshot 29-12, the Panthers scored the equalizer with 14:48 left in regulation to escape with the tie. After enduring a three-hour rain delay on Sunday, the Tigers earned their first victory of the year by defeating the University of Dallas, 3-1, in the conference opener for both teams. Senior forwards Brandon Ogilvie (2:21) and Sean Parham (3:09) struck for a pair of goals just 48 seconds apart early in game. Ogilvie pounced on a rebound of Hunter Martinez' blocked shot at 2:21 and Parham rocketed home a rising blast from the upper right side of the box at 3:09. Freshman midfielder Caden MacKenzie provided some insurance with 11:42 left in the contest, clicking on a through ball from Ogilvie for his first career goal to round out the scoring. It marked the first time Ogilvie recorded a goal and an assist in the same game. Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne stopped three shots to earn his first collegiate victory. CC is home again this week, playing host to Austin College on Friday night and Centenary College on Sunday afternoon.

Dallas
men's soccer team went 0-2 on the week. On Saturday, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Crusaders were dealt a 2-0 neutral-site defeat by Chapman University (Calif.). Nick Echeverry recorded both goals for Chapman, and handed Dallas their first loss of the season. Colorado College bested head coach David Hoffmann's squad by a score of 3-1 on Sunday. In the loss, junior midfielder Aaron Hegemann tallied his second goal of 2013. On tap this week for Dallas are two conference home games -- Centenary (Friday, 5 p.m.); Austin (Sunday, 2 p.m.).

The Schreiner Mountaineers went 0-2 on the week. On Friday, Schreiner traveled to Texas Lutheran to record a tough 0-1 SCAC loss to TLU. Against Houston-Victoria on Saturday, Schreiner lost a 0-4 match to the Jaguars.  This week the Mountaineers will travel to Southwestern (Saturday, Sept. 14th) and Trinity (Sunday, Sept. 22nd) for continued SCAC matches.

The Southwestern Pirates were busy this week, playing three games on the road including two in Washington. Southwestern opened the week against rival Trinity and stole a 1-0 victory on Matthew Nickell's penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Goal keeper Daniel Poole had a huge impact on the game as well, setting a new SU record for saves in a match with 15 to earn the shutout. Southwestern traveled to the northwest for a quick turnaround game, facing Pacific Lutheran on Friday and a rematch with Puget Sound on Saturday. Southwestern's offense was stifled as they struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, falling 3-0 in both matches. The Pirates sit at 3-4 on the year and return home for the first time since opening weekend to kick off SCAC conference matches with Schreiner on Friday and Texas Lutheran on Sunday.

Texas Lutheran
men's soccer team received a late goal from Tim Schaffer to give it a dramatic 1-0 win at home Friday afternoon against Schreiner in its first-ever SCAC matchup. With the clock running out and the two teams looking like they were heading to overtime to decide things, Schaffer (New Braunfels, Texas) took the game into his hands. In the 85th minute, Schaffer began a long run down the middle of the field with the ball. After feigning a shot to buy some space, he took a shot with his right foot that sailed past the Schreiner goalkeeper and into the back of the net. After holding on for the remaining five minutes to secure the win, the Bulldogs extended their season-opening winning streak to four games, moving their record to 4-0 (1-0 SCAC) on the year. The start to 2013 is the Bulldogs' best since winning their first eight games in 2001.

No. 10 Trinity
suffered its second loss of the season in a 1-0 game against Southwestern University on Tuesday.  The loss marked the first time the Tigers have lost to Southwestern in the SCAC era, and the game was also the 2013 conference opener for both teams. Trinity has now lost two regular season games at home for the first time since the 2001 season.  The last time the Tigers lost more than twice at home in the regular season was 1994, which was also the last time the team finished under .500 for the year (7-11-2). The Tigers continue SCAC play this weekend, hosting both Texas Lutheran and Schreiner on Friday and Sunday.
