Women's Basketball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Thanks to its 86-74 home victory over Southwestern University on Saturday, Trinity University stands alone as the lone unbeaten team in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Tigers extended their winning streak to seven games and have now won eight of their past 10 games.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College swept its two games over the weekend, topping the University of Dallas 60-50 and Colorado College 61-49. The ‘Roos are now 9-10 overall and have more than doubled their win total from a year ago. The ‘Roos led by as much as 18 against the Crusaders before holding off a late charge, and Brittany Stepanski had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots in the win. Erin Riley knocked down 4-of-7 threes on her way to 14 points and added eight boards in the win. Against Colorado College, Stepanski notched another double-double with 10 points and 12 boards, and Riley scored 17 with six rebounds. Christina Kime added 13 and Shayna Clardy scored 11 in the win. The ‘Roos host Centenary this week in the team’s final home game of the regular season on Saturday.

Centenary picked up a victory over Colorado College 61-57 on Friday evening. The victory was sandwiched between a pair of losses to Louisiana College and the University of Dallas. Francesca Lawrence and Caitlyn Gentry each logged career-highs during the week. Lawrence posted 12 points in the win over Colorado College while Gentry added 17 points in the setback to Dallas. Vashni Sharp-Moore led the team in scoring averaging 20 points in the three contests while Dionecia Warr supplied 14 points. Brianna Edwards paced the Ladies on the glass with 12.7 during the span. Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 as the Ladies open a five-game, road swing at Austin College.

Colorado College dropped a pair of road conference games over the weekend. The Tigers fell to Centenary College, 61-57 on Friday and Austin College, 61-49 on Sunday. Senior Sarah Gunkel led the team averaging 13.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a game. Senior Kallie Kemling, who leads the conference in free-throw percentage, continued to be reliable at the charity stripe making all seven of her free throws over the weekend. Gunkel earned her first double-double of the season when she recorded 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds against the Ladies. Senior Marissa Gradoz led the team against the Kangaroos with 15 points and eight rebounds. The Tigers are now 3-15 on the season and 3-5 in conference play. CC returns home for the first time after the New Year as it hosts Southwestern and Trinity this weekend.

Dallas (7-9, 2-6 SCAC) went 1-1 on the week in a pair of conference road games. The Crusaders were downed 60-50 by Austin College on Friday evening in Sherman, Texas. Senior guard Kylie Yoshimura tabbed a game-high 19 points, but Dallas could not overcome a 31-19 halftime deficit to the 'Roos. Head coach Jina Johansen's squad prevailed 86-83 over Centenary College of Louisiana on Saturday evening in Shreveport, La. Fueled by sophomore guard Brooke Hagemann's game-high 30 points, Dallas erased a 23-point halftime deficit after a 57-point second-half outburst. Yoshimura recorded a double-double (19 points, 12 assists). The latter tied Janet Gribnitz for the school record set in 1993 versus Howard Payne University. On tap this week for Dallas are a pair of SCAC home contests -- Trinity (Friday, 6 p.m.); Southwestern (Sunday, 12 p.m.).

Southwestern dropped its first SCAC conference game this week, falling 86-74 to Trinity University on Saturday night in San Antonio. The Pirates struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting just under 30% in the frame and trailed by seven at the break. A much stronger second half saw the Pirates pull within three points with just over five minutes to play, but SU wasn't able to take the lead as the Tigers closed the game out from the free throw line. The loss drops Southwestern to 12-5 on the year and 6-1 in the SCAC. They hit the road once again to face Colorado College on Friday and the University of Dallas on Sunday.

Trinity went 2-0 over the past week, capped off with an 86-74 win over Southwestern that put the Tigers alone in first place in the SCAC standings. The Tigers remain the final unbeaten team in SCAC basketball with a 7-0 conference record. Opening the week, Trinity scored a 71-66 road win over UT-Dallas, which was receiving votes in last week’s D3Hoops.com national poll. The Tigers have now won seven consecutive games and hold a 13-4 overall record. Three of the team’s four losses have been by five points or fewer. This weekend, Trinity will continue its SCAC schedule with road games against Dallas and Colorado College. The Tigers defeated both teams earlier this month in San Antonio – edging Dallas 65-59 and beating Colorado College 72-52.
