Women's Basketball Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University posted a perfect 2-0 week in SCAC play as the Pirates won their two games over Colorado College and the University Dallas by an average of 30 points. The wins kept the Pirates just one game back of Trinity University for the top spot in conference standings.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College fell 65-54 to Centenary in the team’s only game of the week, dropping the team to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The ‘Roos shot just 28.1% in the first half as they fell behind 34-26, and hit just 30.6% of their shots overall in the loss, while Centenary helped put the game away by going 11-for-11 from the free throw line in the second half. Brittany Stepanski recorded her third straight double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds and also added two blocks, and Erin Riley scored 15 while hitting four threes. Christina Kime added nine points and five assists.

Centenary picked up its second victory in the last three outings with a 65-54 win at Austin College on Saturday afternoon. Centenary led all, but four minutes of the contest en route to its fourth SCAC win and fifth overall. Vashni Sharp-Moore led the way for the Ladies with 18 points while dishing out a team-best eight assists in the road win. Sharp-Moore has recorded double figures scoring in 17 games this season, including 15 straight with the performance against the Roos. Dionecia Warr added 17 points for the Maroon and White – her team-leading 18th game in double-digits. Brianna Edwards posted 10 points to go along with her team-leading eight rebounds. Edwards has scored in double figures seven times this season and led the Ladies in the rebounding 11 times. The Ladies return to the court on this weekend with road contests at Southwestern and Trinity.

Colorado College
returned home for the first time after the New Year for a pair of conference matchups against Southwestern University and Trinity University. The Tigers fell to Southwestern, 80-49, and Trinity, 75-59, to go 3-17 on the season and 3-7 in conference play. Freshman Danielle Davis led the team during the week averaging 12 points a game, while senior Marissa Gradoz averaged 10.5 points to aid the offense. Senior Sarah Gunkel led the team defensively averaging 10 rebounds a game while picking up her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-best 12 rebounds against Southwestern. Senior Kallie Kemling led the Tigers against Trinity with a career-high seven steals and also scored 14 points. Gradoz led the team offensively on Saturday with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Colorado College hosts the University of Dallas for the 27th Annual Girls and Women in Sports day on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Dallas
(7-11, 2-8 SCAC) went 0-2 in conference home games on the week. The Crusaders held a 27-23 advantage over Trinity on Friday evening, but fell 60-52 behind five second-half 3-pointers by the Tigers. Junior post Christy Allen finished with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds in defeat. On Sunday afternoon at the Maher Athletic Center, Dallas was defeated 90-61 by Southwestern University. Valerie Logan helped the Pirates to a 47-23 lead at the break, after she connected on 5-of-6 from distance in the first half. Southwestern totaled eight in the period and 11 for the game. Senior guard Kylie Yoshimura paired a game-high 19 points with seven assists in the losing bid. On tap for Dallas this week are two road contests -- Dallas Christian College (Tuesday, 6 p.m.); Colorado College (Saturday, 1 p.m.).

Southwestern had a very successful road trip this week, going 2-0 in SCAC conference play to move to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the SCAC. Both nights Southwestern jumped out to early leads and were never threatened as the clock ticked to zero. SU won by an average of 30 points, taking an 80-49 decision over Colorado College and 90-61 win over the University of Dallas. With five games to play the Pirates are in second place in the conference, one game behind Trinity. They return home for the third and final round of conference play this weekend, facing Centenary College on Friday night and Austin College on Saturday.

Trinity improved its winning streak to nine games with a pair of SCAC road wins over the weekend, defeating both Dallas and Colorado College. The Tigers have won five road games in their last six contests, and the current win streak equals the total number of wins Trinity had all of last year. The Tigers are 15-4 overall this season, and 9-0 in SCAC play – leading the conference standings by one game. Trinity will open up a three-game home stand this weekend, hosting Austin College and Centenary. The Tigers swept both teams in a pair of road weekends earlier this year. Trinity had one blowout win against each team, as well as a pair of close wins.
