Women's Basketball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas traveled out to California to compete in the David Wells Classic. The Crusaders went 2-0 and were led by SCAC Player of the Week Kylie Yoshimura. The senior guard averaged 15 points and 8.5 assists per game during the weekend.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College split its two games last week to bring its record to 2-2 overall this season. The ‘Roos fell 75-59 on the road against UT-Tyler before picking up a 62-50 victory over Texas Lutheran at home on Saturday. Shayna Clardy led the way all week offensively, knocking down 8-of-11 threes and shooting 68.4% overall while averaging 20.5 points and 2.0 steals per game. Christina Kime chipped in with averages of 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists for the week and Erin Riley added 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and shot better than 50% from the field. Brooke Melton pulled down 22 rebounds in the two games. The ‘Roos are home again on Wednesday when they host UT-Dallas at 6:00 p.m.

Senior Vashni Sharp-Moore and freshmen Brianna Edwards each got their first double-double of the year, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a tough defensive Louisiana College team as the Centenary fell 100-63 Monday night. Centenary improved its offensive production by shooting a season high from the field this game at 39.7%. Sharp-Moore led all scorers with 22 points while Edwards added 13 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophomore Dionecia Warr continued her excellent season by following Sharp-Moore in scoring with 19 points. She also had 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 5 assists for a team high. Sharp-Moore led the ladies with 22 points for the second consecutive game this season in their home opener against the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. The Ladies (0-3) put up a tough fight, but the Choctaws were able to pull away at the beginning of the second half as Centenary fell 77-61. Warr followed Sharp-Moore in double digits with 11 points. Centenary continue on the road Tuesday, November 27 against McNeese State at 5:30pm.

Colorado College
continued play at home hosting the 2012 Thanksgiving Classic. Senior Marissa Gradoz led the team offensively averaging 11.7 points a game, while freshman Courtney Tyus averaged 11 points and four assists a game to aid the Tiger attack. On defense, Gradoz and senior Sarah Gunkel both averaged 8.3 rebounds a game and Tyus averaged 4.7 steals a game for team bests. CC dropped all three of its games during the tournament to St. Olaf College (80-51), Ohio Wesleyan University (62-57) and Lewis and Clark College (71-44).  The Tigers hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to Spokane, Wash. to take on Whitworth College and Whitman College on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, respectively.

Dallas
(3-1) went a perfect 2-0 on the week in the David Wells Classic in Claremont, Calif. Dallas trailed Friday to Pomona-Pitzer College at halftime, 27-21, but persevered to a 67-62 victory. Sophomore guard Christina Kurt finished tied for a game-high 16 points. Head coach Jina Johansen's Crusaders then turned their attention to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College in what proved a historic game. Yet again in comeback fashion, Dallas claimed a 59-55 victory Saturday behind senior guard Kylie Yoshimura's game-high 17 points. Yoshimura became Dallas' career assists record-holder in the contest, eclipsing Kristy Malone's previous mark of 442. On tap for Dallas this week are two home games -- Southwestern Adventist University (Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.); Dallas Christian College (Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.).

Southwestern went 1-2 in action this week to fall to 3-2 on the season. Tuesday evening, SU faced Mary Hardin-Baylor in a rematch of their season opener and struggled to close out the game, falling 84-82. The Pirates led by as many as 10 in the first half and by seven with under four minutes to go, but were held to just two points in the final two minutes. Southwestern rebounded with a 56-53 win over Schreiner in San Antonio, fending off the Mountaineers final surge to close out the game. Sunday, Southwestern struggled in the final minutes of the game again, being held scoreless in the final 4:30 to fall 63-62 to Hardin-Simmons. Chelsea Leeder continues to close in on the Southwestern record for most threes made in a career, needing just three more to secure her spot in the record books. The Pirates open SCAC conference action on Friday night, facing Austin College in Sherman.

Trinity
opened its 2012-13 season at its Thanksgiving Classic, going 1-1 over the two-day event in San Antonio. The Tigers lost a 75-77 game against Hardin-Simmons in the season opener, then bounced back with a 79-71 win over Schreiner the next afternoon. Sunday’s win over Schreiner was the first for the new Tiger head coach, Cameron Hill. The Tigers will be on the road for the first time this season over the weekend, opening SCAC play against Centenary and Austin College. Last season, Trinity split with Austin College as both teams won by double digits on their home floor.
