LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Preseason favorite Southwestern University jumped out to a 2-0 start to the 2012-13 season thanks in large part to SCAC Player of the Week Annie Bourne. The sophomore averaged 14 points and 20 rebounds in the Pirates' two wins.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College split its first two games of the season, falling 58-57 to East Texas Baptist before rolling past NYU-Polytechnic 68-49 at the University of Dallas Tip-Off Classic. Against ETBU the ‘Roos led for the majority of the game and at one point led by as much as 14, but ETBU narrowed the gap and then ended the game on a 7-2 run to hand Austin College the loss. Shayna Clardy scored 15 points and Erin Riley added 14, and Brooke Melton had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Against NYU-Poly, the ‘Roos led by only four at the half but shot 59.1% in the second half to run away with the game, getting 13 players in the scoring column in the process. Brittany Stepanski came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards while Christina Kime had a team-high 13 points in the win. The ‘Roos are on the road on Tuesday when they take on UT-Tyler.
Dionecia Warr had a double-double for Centenary
as she scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
However, three Lamar players scored double figures and turnovers
cost the Ladies as they fell 88-30 Thursday night. Centenary (0-1)
struggled from the field, shooting 17.9 percent, and the Lady
Cardinals defense forced 32 turnovers. Lamar also won the battle on
the boards 52-46. Kalis Loyd led all scorers with 22 points and
pulled down 12 boards. Asia Booker contributed 14 points and had 6
of Lamar’s 24 steals. Vashni Sharp-Moore followed Warr in
scoring with 9 points. Brianna Edwards tied Warr for the team lead
on rebounds with 10. Centenary continues play on November 19 at
Louisiana College at 5:30 pm.
Colorado College opened the 2012-13 season at home, while
hosting the 2012 Tip-Off Tournament. The Tigers were led by their
three seniors all scoring in double figures in both of the
team’s games. Sarah Gunkel averaged 15.5 points, Kalli
Kemling averaged 13 points and Marissa Gradoz added 11.5 points a
game to lead the team offensively. Gradoz led the team on the
boards averaging 9.5 rebounds a game. CC dropped its season opener
to the College of Saint Benedict, 75-53, on Friday and finished the
week falling to Macalester College, 66-0, on Saturday. The Tigers
continue to play at home as they host the 2012 Thanksgiving
Classic. CC begins the tournament against St. Olaf College at 5
p.m. on Wednesday.
Dallas (1-1) split a pair of home games on the week to
open their 2012-13 season. In the first game of the Dallas Tip-Off
Classic, the Crusaders were led by junior post Christy Allen (27
points, 12 rebounds) past the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly. Head
Coach Jina Johansen's squad held a 44-19 halftime advantage, and
finished to a 79-64 victory in the season opener. Dallas took this
success into the first-half of Saturday afternoon's bout versus
East Texas Baptist University at the Maher Athletic Center. The
Crusaders held a 33-26 lead at the break, but could not stave off
the Tigers down the stretch en route to a 66-58 defeat. This week,
Dallas heads to Claremont, Calif, to participate in the David Wells
Classic -- Pomona-Pitzer (Friday, 7:30 p.m. PST);
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Saturday, 7 p.m. PST).
Southwestern kicked off their season by hosting
their Tip-off Tournament on Friday and Saturday and emerged with
two double digit victories to start the season 2-0. Behind Annie
Bourne, SU set the tempo early and never looked back for an 84-73
victory over Mary Hardin Baylor. Bourne was just three rebounds shy
of tying the Southwestern record for most rebounds in a game and
also had 18 points. ON Saturday night, it was Jordan Owens who
entered the record books with a 32 point showing, tying the
Southwestern record. Southwestern once again upped the tempo and
posted 80+ points to win 83-69 over Texas Lutheran University. The
Pirates hit the road for the first time this season as they face
Mary Hardin-Baylor in a rematch in Belton on Tuesday night before
heading to San Antonio to take on Schreiner and Hardin-Simmons
University on Saturday and Sunday.
Trinity will begin its 2012-13 season this weekend,
hosting the four-team Trinity Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday and
Sunday. The Tigers will face Hardin-Simmons in the season opener at
4p.m. on Saturday, followed by a game against future SCAC member
Schreiner on Sunday. The following week, Trinity will travel to
Mary Hardin-Baylor for a mid-week road opener, then starts SCAC
play with road matchups against Centenary and Austin College.
