LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The southern schools had another big weekend over their northern counterparts, combining to go 8-0 over the weekend and make up the top half of the SCAC standings.
Austin College
The 'Roos went 0-2 over the weekend, falling 89-77 to Texas
Lutheran and 65-51 to Southwestern. Against the Bulldogs, Austin
College shot 52.8% from the field, but it was not enough to pick up
a win on the road. Christina Kime added 13 points
and eight assists, and Brianna Harvey scored
nine points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Kali
Vittallo hit 3-of-4 three pointers to finish with nine
points. Against the Pirates, Riley was the lone 'Roo to
reach double figures, coming off the bench to hit 2-of-5 threes on
her way to 10 points. Chrissy Ray chipped in eight
points and Harvey added eight points and
seven rebounds for Austin College, as the 'Roos held Southwestern
to just 33.3% shooting but the Pirates outscored Austin College
14-to-5 from the free throw line. The 'Roos fall to 8-11 overall
and 3-6 in the SCAC. They return home this upcoming weekend as they
welcome in Colorado College on Friday and Centenary on
Saturday.
Centenary College
The Ladies went 0-2 over the weekend, falling 100-33 to
Trinity followed by a 66-50 loss to Schreiner. Against the
Tigers, Rebecca Thompson led the Maroon and White with
11 points and 14 rebounds, with 11 boards coming the defensive end,
while Briana Edwards and Haley Deshuatelle each tallied
eight points for the Ladies in the effort. On Sunday against the
Mountaineers, Edwards posted her first career
20-point-20-rebound game of her career to lead the Centenary
women’s basketball team. Edwards garnered 21
points and 20 rebounds in the decision for her team-leading eighth
double-double of the season. The Ladies fell to 0-20 on the season
and 0-10 in SCAC play. They will attempt to pick up their first of
the season as they hit the road, traveling to Dallas on Friday and
Austin College on Saturday.
Colorado College
Colorado College went 0-2 over the weekend, falling 74-68
to Schreiner, and following that up with a 60-35 loss to Trinity.
In the loss to Mountaineers, Korbyn Ukasick connected on
five of nine three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 19
points for Colorado College. The sophomore forward also grabbed
eight rebounds and had three assists while Katie Waters added 16
points and six assists. Danielle Davis registered 11 points, eight
boards, and three assists in the loss. The following night, the
Tigers held a 17-15 lead over top-ranked Trinity for nearly 15
minutes, but couldn't get any momentum going forward. Davis led the
way with 13 points with seven boards while Katie Wirth pulled down
11 rebounds. The Tigers fall to 2-19 on the season and 2-9 in SCAC
play. The Tigers hit their final pair of road games this upcoming
weekend, taking on Austin College on Friday and Dallas on
Saturday.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders went 0-2 this past weekend, falling 57-54
to Southwestern and 92-75 to Texas Lutheran. Against the Pirates,
Marleyna Bustamante claimed the lone double figure scoring
performance for the Crusaders with her second highest total 19
points on the campaign. She also eclipsed 1,000 points in her
career in the loss. It is the second time this season the guard has
matched that total as she's combined for 61 in the past trio of
contests. Against the Bulldogs, Bustamante, again, led the way
with 21 points with a 10-of-12 performance from the
charity stripe. Seana
Stoia contributed a season-high 14 points
while Lindsey Gendron chipped in 11 from the
bench. Dallas falls to 10-8 on the season and 4-5 in SCAC play. The
Crusaders will return home this upcoming weekend, welcoming in
Centenary on Friday and Colorado College on
Saturday.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 2-0 in conference play this past
weekend, defeating Colorado College 74-68 and following that up
with a 66-50 win over Centenary. Against the
Tigers, Brooke Sanders led a balanced Schreiner attack
with 13 points, including hitting five-of-six free throws to stall
CC's rally attempt in the final minute. Chris
Jones added 10 points on five-for-eight shooting - with three
steals - in just 11 minutes of play. The following night against
the Ladies, Sanders scored 24 points and plucked six
rebounds to lead the Mountaineer women to their fourth straight
victory. Codi Simmons posted 12 points, four
rebounds and four assists to allow Schreiner to pull away. The
Mountaineers moved to 9-10 overall and 7-2 in SCAC play, currently
sitting in second place with Southwestern, whom they hold the
tiebreaker against. The Mountaineers will have a stiff test this
upcoming weekend, hitting the road to battle Texas Lutheran on
Friday and Southwestern on Saturday.
Southwestern University
The Pirates went 2-0 over the weekend with wins over
Dallas (57-54) and Austin College (65-51). Against the
Crusaders, Jordan Owens led Southwestern with 15
points as SU shot 36.7% from the floor and 30% from three point
range. Annie Bourne added in 12 points and 12 rebounds. Against the
'Roos, Bourne posted 10 points and a game high 16
rebounds to move to 1,059 rebounds, only 24 off the SCAC career
rebounding record. She also now has 967 career
points. Owens led all scorers with 17 points and Logan
chipped in 14 on 5-10 shooting from the floor and 2-3 from three
point range. Southwestern moves to 8-11 on the season and 6-2 in
SCAC play. The Pirates remain tied for second with Schreiner and
they will return to action next weekend with a pair of huge games,
taking on first place Trinity on Friday and Schriener on
Saturday.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs had a 2-0 record over the weekend, defeating Austin
College, 89-77 and Dallas, 92-75. Against the 'Roos, Taylor
Dydalewicz led the scoring attack with 19 points while Karisa Cantu
added 16 points and seven assists. Bianca Casa was also in double
digits with 13 points behind three 3-pointers. The following night
against the Crusaders, a huge 50-point second half led the Bulldogs
to a blowout victory. Cantu scored 19 points in the second half to
finish with 25 points to go with three assists and two steals.
Dydalewicz added 22 points and nine boards while Savannah Hight
scored 18 points and Kristen Lye added 16 points. The Bulldogs have
now won three games in a row and are beginning to look like the
defending champions, moving to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC.
Texas Lutheran, currently in third place, welcomes in No. 2
Schreiner on Friday and No. 1 Trinity on Saturday.
Trinity University
The Tigers went 2-0 and run their winning streak to six with a
pair of dominant wins, defeating Centenary, 100-33 and Colorado
College, 60-35. They are the first team to clinch a spot in the
SCAC Tournament. Against the Ladies, Rebecca Gordon led
Trinity in scoring, pouring in 20 points on 7-7 shooting. She hit
all three of her three-point attempts and was 3-3 from the foul
line. Gordon also added five steals and four assists in her 20
minutes off the bench. Taylor Hollins and Allison Staley
had 14 points while Anecia Richardson added 12 points. Against the
Tigers, Hollins and Staley came off the bench to
lead Trinity with 12 points each. Monica Holguin was the
only other Tiger player in double figures, hitting 3-4
three-pointers on her way to 11 points. Trinity is now 17-3 on the
season and 8-1 in SCAC play. They have now won six games in a row.
Trinity has a huge weekend coming up as they travel to Southwestern
on Friday and Texas Lutheran on
Saturday.
