Women's Basketball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – It was a full slate of SCAC hoops action this past weekend and what a weekend it was for the group of SCAC teams located in the South. The southern teams all went 2-0 over their northern counterparts and all four are currently sitting towards the top of the SCAC Standings. 

Austin College
The 'Roos went 0-2 over the weekend and have now dropped four games in a row, losing 64-48 to Trinity and 60-51 to Schreiner to drop to 5-8 on the season and 0-3 in SCAC play. Against the Tigers, the two teams went into halftime all tied up at 30, but Trinity would clamp down on the 'Roos defensively, outscoring them 34-18 to pull away for the win. After shooting close to 36% in the first half, the 'Roos went cold and shot only 22% in the second half. Erin Riley led the charge with 13 points while Kendall Heitmeier had nine points in the loss. They would then fall to the Schreiner Mountaineers, 60-51, as the 'Roos again struggled from the field, shooting only 28%. Riley led the way again with 15 points and entered the Austin College record book as she joined the 1,000 career points club. Christina Kime added 12 points while Brianna Harvey had 10 points. Conference play continues for the 'Roos as they hit the road to take on Colorado College on Friday and Centenary on Sunday.

Centenary College
The Ladies went 0-2 on the weekend, losing 97-56 to Texas Lutheran and 78-55 to Southwestern to fall to 0-14 on teh season and 0-3 in SCAC play. Against TLU, Briana Edwards became the program’s leader in blocked shots with 107 as the junior notched her 33rd rejection of the season in the outing. Rebecca Thompson led the scoring output with 15 points and nine boards while DeiAnna Hall had 10 points. The Ladies committed 24 turnovers which proved to be the difference maker in the loss to the Bulldogs. Against Southwestern, Hall paced a trio of Ladies in double figures with 17 points while Edwards added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Rhonda Martin rounded out the scoring with 10 points. The Ladies will return home for the first time in 2015 as they welcome in Dallas on Friday and Austin College on Sunday for conference play. 

Colorado College
The Tigers dropped a pair of confernece matchups this past weekend to fall to 2-13 on the season and 2-2 in SCAC play. They began with a 72-68 loss to Southwestern where Danielle Davis led the charge with 21 points and seven boards while Courtney Tyus had 12 points, 12 assists, and six rebounds. The Tigers shot 46% from the field, but could not convert at the free throw line, shooting only 11-for-21. Korbyn Ukasick added 13 points while Katie Waters had 11 points. Against Texas Lutheran, the Tigers found themselves in a close battle again after one half of play, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much, outscoring Colorado College 52-36 in the second half for an 85-65 victory. Davis led the way again with 18 points and seven boards while Waters had 17 points. Tyus also added 14 points and seven assists. The Tigers will return home this upcoming weekend as they welcome in Austin College on Friday and Dallas on Sunday in SCAC action. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders dropped a pair of home contests this past weekend to Schreiner and Trinity to fall to 7-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. They started the weekend with a 69-66 loss to the Mountaineers. In, what turned out to be, a back and forth contest, Schreiner took the lead with 1:53 remaining and relied on tough defense to secure the win. Michelle DeCound was huge off the bench, scoring 15 points to go with eight rebounds while Brooke Hagemann and Marleyna Bustamante each added 13 points. Dallas then fell to Trinity, 66-58 in a game where the Crusaders only shot 27% from the field. DeCoud led the way again with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Hagemann added 16 points. Dallas will hit the road this upcoming weekend as they travel to Centenary on Friday and followed that up with a trip to Colorado College on Sunday. 

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers had a huge weekend, picking up two wins over Dallas and Austin College to go to 4-8 on the season and, more importantly, 2-0 to start conference play. Against the Crusaderes, Christina Jones hit the go-ahead basket with 1:53 remaining as the Mountaineers used defense to clinch the victory, 69-66. Kelsie Jackson and Codi Simmons led the attacked with 14 points each while Jackson added eight rebounds to lead the way. Sabriyyah Fennell added nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. They followed that up with a terrific defensive performance in a 60-51 win over Austin College. Jackson led the way again with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Brooke Sanders added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jordyn Villa rounded the scoring out with 12 points on the afternoon. Schreiner will return home this weekend as they open their brand new events center, the new home to their basketball teams, welcomeing in Texas Lutheran on Friday and Southwestern on Saturday. 

Southwestern University
The Pirates went 2-0 at home over the weekend to improve to 3-0 in SCAC play and improve their overall record to 5-9. In a 72-68 win over Colorado College, the Pirates found themselves in an evenly matches contest with the Tigers, but were able to secure their win at the charity stripe, shooting 15-for-19 from the free throw line compared to only 11-for-21 from Colorado College. Jordan Owens had another monster game with 24 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and a block while Annie Bourne added 15 points and nine rebounds. Olivia Podras added 10 points. In a 78-55 win over Centenary, Valerie Logan became the school's career assist leader as she scored 12 points and dished six assists in the win. Bourne had 11 points and a game high 15 points while Madison Eschle and Podras had 10 points each. The Pirates will hit the road as they take on Trinity on Friday and Schreiner on Saturday. 

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went 2-0 over the weekend to go to 7-6 overall on the season and 2-1 in SCAC play. Texas Lutheran began the weekend with a dominating 97-56 victory over Centenary. In a game that saw 18 players earn playing time, Savannah Hight led the charge with 14 points while Karisa Cantu had 11 points and five assists. Olivia Marzullo added 10 points while Kristen Lye had eight points and eight boards in the contest. The following day against Colorado College, the Bulldogs blew a four point game wide open in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 52-36, to pick up an 85-65 victory. Bianca Casas and Cantu led teh way with 16 points each and combined for 11 total assists. Lye had 12 points and nine rebounds while Hight had 11 points. The Bulldogs will hit the road for a pair of tough matchups, starting on Friday at Schreiner as the Mountaineers will play their first game at their new events center, and followed by a rematch of the 2014 SCAC Championship Game against Trinity on Saturday. 

Trinity University
The Tigers went 2-0 on the weekend and have now won 11 games in a row to go to 11-2 on the season and start the conference season at 2-0. In a 64-48 win over Austin College, Trinity turned a tied contest at the half, into a blowout as they completely controlled the second half, outscoring the 'Roos 34-18. Anecia Richardson led the way with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots while Lauren Splawn added 17 points. Hannah Coley scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half and added six rebounds, five assists, and two steals in the process. Trinity followed that up with a 66-58 win over Dallas. Coley led the way again with 19 points while Richardson added another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. The Tigers will return home as they welcome in arch-rival Southwestern on Friday and follow that up with a rematch of last year's SCAC title game against Texas Luthearn on Saturday.
