LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – With only two weekends remaining, the SCAC standings are shaping up for an exciting finish as many teams in the conference continue to fight for a regular season championship and seeding at the SCAC Basketball Tournament.
Austin College
The 'Roos got to 10 wins on the season with victories over
Colorado College and Centenary this past weekend. in a 67-48 win
over the Tigers, Kendall Heitmeier hit 7-of-12 shots to
finish with 15 points to pace Austin College, and Kali Vittallo
added 12. Erin Riley hit 2-of-4 threes to finish with 11 points and
added six rebounds and four assists, and Chrissy Ray and Brianna
Harvey each chipped in with 10 points. Christina Kime handed out
eight assists in the victory. Austin College followed that up with
a 67-40 win over Centenary. Heitmeier finished with 12
points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three, in just 12
minutes of action to lead the 'Roos. Riley added 10 points, and Ray
finished just shy of a double-double, scoring nine points and
grabbing nine rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. The
'Roos are now 10-11 on the season and 5-6 in conference play,
officially clinching a spot in the SCAC Tournament in two weeks.
They hit the road this upcoming weekend, taking on Trinity on
Friday and Schreiner on Saturday.
Centenary College
The Ladies went 0-2 over the weekend, falling in 91-50 to
the University of Dallas and 67-40 to Austin College. Against the
Crusaders, Jessica Bruit led a trio of Ladies in double figures
with 15 points on the evening. The mark ties a season-high for the
freshman who set the benchmark earlier this season against Elmira.
Rebecca Thompson added 11 points with 10 coming from Briana
Edwards. In the loss to the 'Roos, Jessica Bruti scored
a season-high 16 points to lead the Ladies. The double figure
outing marks the second straight for the freshman and her third
this season. The Ladies are officially eliminated from postseason
play. They go to 0-22 on the season and 0-12 in SCAC play. They
wrap up their season this weekend, at home, taking on Texas
Lutheran on Friday and Southwestern on Sunday.
Colorado College
Courtney Tyus became the 11th player in the 40-year
history of Colorado College women's basketball to record at least
1,000 career points on Saturday night at Dallas. Tyus, who recorded
12 of her 14 points during the second half, reached the milestone
when she scored on a layup with 14:01 remaining in the contest. The
senior guard also dished out seven assists to join Melanie Auguste
(2005-09) as the only Tigers to record 400 or more. Unfortunately,
those accomplishments were the bright spots in an 85-67 loss to the
Crusaders. Danielle Davis led CC with a game-high 18 points and
seven rebounds. The junior forward made seven of 11 shots from the
floor and sand four of five free throws. Sophomore forward Korbyn
Ukasick added 15 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, while
junior guard Katie Waters added 13 points. On Friday night, Davis
registered team highs of 14 points and seven rebounds, but Colorado
College dropped a 67-48 decision at Austin. Junior guard Katie
Wirth added eight points and seven rebounds. CC closes out the
2014-15 campaign next weekend at home against Southwestern and
Texas Lutheran on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders went 2-0 this past weekend, defeating
Centenary on Friday and Colorado College on Saturday. In a 91-50
win over the Ladies, Brooke
Hagemann managed a double-double with game-highs scoring
and rebounding at 20 and 10, respectively. Her totals helped mark
the forward as the 12th player in school history
to surpass the 1,000-career mark. Sammi Tso finished with 14
points, connecting a 80-percent shooting (4-of-5) from downtown,
and dished out five assists. Sophomore Lindsey
Gendron added 13 off the bench to round out the trio of double
figure scorers. They followed that up with an 85-67 win over
Colorado College. Marleyna Bustamante led the Crusaders
with 16 points. Tso chipped in 13,
and Hagemann notched 10. The Crusaders move to
13-8 on the and 6-5 in SCAC play. They hit the road again this
upcoming weekend, taking on Schreiner on Friday and Trinity on
Saturday to close the conference season.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers struggled this past weekend, dropping
games to Southwestern and Texas Lutheran in conference
play. The Mountaineers got 17 points, nine rebounds four
steals and three assists from Kelsie Jackson and 13 points, four
rebounds and three steals from Olivia Lott. Brooke Sanders was the
third member of the squad in double figures as she poured in 12
points against the Bulldogs. The following night against
Southwestern, Sabriyyah Fennell had 14 points and four
rebounds and was one of three Mountaineers players in
double-figures. Sanders posted 12 points and seven boards while
Codi Simmons came off the bench to add 11 points. The Mountaineers
will look to make a move for the No. 3 seed as they conclude their
home season this upcoming weekend, taking on Dallas on Friday and
Austin College on Saturday.
Southwestern University
It was a monumental weekend for the Southwestern women's
basketball team. Not only did Annie Bourne become the new career
leader in rebounds, but the Pirates got two huge wins over Trinity
and Schreiner to take over first place out right in the SCAC
Standings. In a 61-52 win over Trinity, Annie Bourne led
the way with 12 points and 18 rebounds while
Madison Eschle led the Pirates in scoring with 15 points
while also grabbing nine boards. Lashelle Williams added in 13. The
following night, on senior night, Bourne moved atop
the SCAC in career rebounds with 1,090 for her career as she pulled
down 12 in the win over Schreiner. Jordan Owens led all
scorers with 22 points on the night while going a perfect 10-10
from the free throw line. Bourne added in 13
and Eschle 11. The Pirates have won five
games in a row and are now 11-11 overall and 9-2 in conference
play. Southwestern will remain on the road the rest of the way,
taking on Colorado College on Friday and Centenary College on
Sunday.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs move their focus to a possible No. 1 seed as they
swept through Schreiner and Trintiy this past weekend in the Dog
House, moving to 8-1 at home this season. In the 82-67 win over
Schreiner, Taylor Dydalewicz led the Bulldogs with 27
points and, for the second straight game, finished just one rebound
shy of a double-double. Three other Bulldogs finished in
double figures with Kristen Lye scoring 11 and racking up the
double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds on the night. Savannah
Hight added 10 points while Natalie Vella added 10. The following
night against Trinity, Karisa Cantu led all scorers with
18. She added seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Texas
Lutheran moves to 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the SCAC. The Bulldogs
have now won five in a row and will hit the road again, taking on
Centenary on Friday and Colorado College on
Sunday.
Trinity University
The Tigers saw their six game winning streak come to a screeching
halt, falling to Southwestern and Texas Lutheran this past weekend.
Against the Pirates, Anecia Richardson led the Tigers
with 15 points, going 7-9 from the field, as well as pulling in a
team-best seven rebounds. Lauren Splawn contributed 13 points,
going 4-17 beyond the arc. Bryony Harris (eight points) produced a
game-leading six steals. The following night against the Bulldogs,
Richardson led the way with 10 points and 10 boards while Monica
Holguin added 10 points of her own to go with five assists. Trinity
falls to 17-5 on the season and 8-3 in SCAC play. The Tigers will
have to fight back to try and earn a first day bye at the SCAC
Tournament. They finish the season at home, where they are 7-1 this
season. They take on Austin College on Friday and Dallas on
Saturday.
