Women's Basketball Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The new SCAC women's basketball season opened up with six of the eight teams in action this past weekend. Check out how all the teams did over the weekend and who they will take on next.

Austin College
The 'Roos opened up their season at home against the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Saturday afternoon in Sherman. Erin RileyChristina Kime, and Brianna Harvey combined for 70 points and the Austin College women's basketball team poured in 54 second half points but the 'Roos were unable to overcome a big halftime deficit in a 97-85 loss to the visitors. Austin College shot 56.8% from the field and 71.4% from three point range after halftime after falling behind 55-31 at the break. Kime finished with 25 points, eight assists, and six rebounds and Riley hit 6-of-10 threes on her way to 25 points and seven boards. Riley also added five assists. Harvey went 7-of-12 from the field and scored a career-high 20 in the loss. Austin College will hit the road on Tuesday, taking on East Texas Baptist and will return again on Friday to take on Texas-Dallas.

Centenary College
The Centenary women’s basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 107-50 loss to the No. 13 team in thr the nation, the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday afternoon in the Gold Dome. Briana Edwards and Rebecca Thompson led the Ladies in scoring with 11 points. Edwards picked up where she left off last season as the Shreveport, La., native grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The Maroon and White shot 27.1 percent from the field in the contest while UTT connected on half its shots including 41.4 percent from behind the arc. The Patriots turned 29 Centenary turnovers into 35 points in the outing. Centenary returns to action on Monday as they host Louisiana College and will be back in action in Irving on the weekend, taking on the Ozarks and Elmira. 

Colorado College
The Tigers opened their season this past weekend with a pair of tough losses to Hardin-Simmons and St. Lawrence at the Colorado College Classic. In the loss to Hardin-Simmons, Danielle Davis poured in a career high 31 points, but it wasn't enough to get Colorado College a victory over the Cowgirls on Saturday night at Reid Arena. The Cowgirls broke open a tight game with 25-10 spurt midway through the second half and held on for a 75-67. Korbyn Ukasick added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers. Against St. Lawrence, Courtney Tyus led the Tigers with 24 points and four steals while Malia Shappell had 11 points, four assists and five steals for the Tigers and Ukasick added 10 points. Colorado College will head to the East Coast this upcoming weekend, heading to Massachusetts to take on Wheaton and Bridgewater State. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders did not play this weekend, but will open up things up at home against Elmira and Ozarks this weekend. 

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers headed to the Great Northwest this past weekend, visiting Portland, Ore. to take on Lewis & Clark and Willamette to open up the new season. In the opener, cold shooting led to a tough loss to Lewis & Clark, 51-44, on Saturday. Junior Kelsie Jackson led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Chris Jones scored 11 points with four boards. Sophomore Olivia Lott and junior Kaitlyn Goertz tallied six and five rebounds respectively. Sophomore Sabriyyah Fennell scored six points. The Mountaineers also won the turnover battle, 15-13. Willamette took advantage of a free throw shooting to take a 57-53 victory over the Mountaineers. Jackson again led SU with 17 points and seven rebounds. Simmons tallied 11 points and four rebounds while sophomore Sabriyyah Fennell went for eight points and seven boards. The Mountaineers will remain in the West Coast, taking on Pacific on Tuesday and will then remain on the road and take on Howard Payne on Saturday.

Southwestern University
The Pirates did not play this weekend, but will open up things up at home this Tuesday against Texas-Dallas and will then travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Denison. 

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs battled back from a 12-point second-half deficit against Texas-Dallas in its season opener, taking a one-point lead with a minute to play. But the Bulldogs couldn't hold on, falling 58-55 on the road. Kristen Lye played a huge role in Texas Lutheran's second-half comeback, scoring 12 of her game-high 19 points in the final 20 minutes. She finished the game with those 19 points to go along with four rebounds and two blocks. She shot 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Three different Bulldogs finished with double-digit scoring. Taylor Dydalewicz tallied 14 points and five rebounds, and Karisa Cantu scored 10 to go along with five assists and four rebounds. The offense was clicking in the second half for TLU. The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the field and assisted on seven of their 11 made baskets in that final 20 minutes of action. Texas Lutheran will play its home opener against Concordia (Texas) and will follow that up with a road matchup against Mary-Hardin Baylor on the weekend.

Trinity University
The Tigers went to the Great Northwest over the weekend, taking on George Fox and Linfield. Against the Bruins, All-American Anecia Richardson was the only Tiger player to score in double figures, putting 12 points on the board, on 5-9 shooting from the field. Elizabeth Balido returned to the lineup after an injury, and scored nine points, all in 3-point range. She shot 3-9 beyond the arc. Taylor Hollins led the team with a total of eight rebounds. Against the Wildcats, Monica Holguin led Trinity with 16 points off the bench, hitting 4-11 from the field and 6-10 from the free throw line. She also knocked in a pair of three-point baskets, collected three rebounds, and dished out a team-best four assists. Caitlin Barrett was the only Tiger starter in double figures, picking up 12 points on 5-12 shooting. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts this weekend. She added a pair of assists and three rebounds. Trinity will return to action on Saturday as they will take on Hardin-Simmons on the road.
