ETHAN WENDEL OF MCMURRY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Louise, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, April 14 through Sunday, April 20. SCAC Baseball Release - Week 11
Wendel got the win in the War Hawks, 5-1, victory over Ozarks on the road last Thursday. Wendel went 7.1 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven, while allowing just one earned run. He issued just three walks to post a 1.30 WHIP to go along with his 1.17 ERA.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior Tyler Herrera of Centenary was outstanding in the final home start of his star-studded career for the Diamond Gents on Friday versus Dallas as he threw a complete game in Centenary's 14-2 win in game one of a DH. Herrera allowed just two runs, both earned, and three hits in his seven innings of work with two walks and five strikeouts. The lefty did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and did not allow a run until the seventh. The CG and shutout were Herrera's seventh and third respectively in his career. Senior Otto Franz of Concordia turned in another robust performance in a complete game victory over Texas Lutheran. Franz struck out six batters and only allowed two earned runs in a 13-3 victory in game one. Franz didn’t face a batter over the minimum until the fourth frame as he went on to toss 104 pitches. Senior Stephen Rutherford of Southwestern got a complete game win on the bump in a 19-5 road win at Schreiner for the Pirates. Rutherford went seven innings, striking out nine and scattering nine hits, while allowing just five earned runs. Senior right-hander Will Hellings of Trinity led the Tigers to a 4-0 record last week, including a run-rule win over Mary Hardin-Baylor and a three-game SCAC road weekend sweep against St. Thomas. Hellings earned the win in just his second start of the season on Tuesday night at UMHB, giving up two earned runs and notching a career-high nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Hellings is now 3-1 this season with four saves, recording 37 strikeouts in 28.2 innings, and posting an ERA of 5.34 in 11 total appearances.
