ABILENE, Texas – McMurry announced changes in the coaching staffs of both the men's and women's soccer programs with the departure of Marquis Muse.
Head women's soccer coach Charles Nobles takes the helm of both programs this fall. Lorenzo Segura continues as the men's assistant coach and Madelyn Wilson joins the women's staff, replacing Kate Holland.
"There's never a great time to lose a head coach but we are blessed to have Charles available and ready to step up again," said McMurry athletic director Larry Dockery. "He continues to be a valuable member of the McMurry family."
Nobles has a 54-51-16 record in six seasons as the women's head coach with 31 of those wins coming in the last three full seasons (excluding Covid). He previously served as an assistant coach of both teams.
"I would like to thank Dr. Harper and Coach Dockery for the honor of being able to be the head coach of McMurry men's and women's soccer program. When I was hired in the fall of 2016, I was the assistant coach for both and developed great pride in both programs," Noble said. "In 2019 I had the privilege to coach both programs as well. This has always been a dream of mine to have the opportunity to be the head coach of both programs and I could not be more excited for the opportunity. The scholar-athletes at McMurry are incredibly special people and I am excited to help the soccer players have a great experience and accomplish their goals on and off the pitch. Ala Cumba!"
In addition to assisting the men's team, Segura adds recruiting coordinator and strength roles to his duties.
"Promoting Coach Segura to recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coach to go along with his role as the assistant was a no-brainer," said Nobles. "He brings an incredible class this year that I know War Hawk fans are going to love to watch. He has the respect and admiration of the current players. Coach Lo, as the players call him, brings an optimistic presence every day, he has an extremely high soccer IQ and will play a large factor in the success our men will have on and off the field"
"Losing Coach Holland has been very bittersweet. She was an incredible player, captain, and then assistant coach for us," Noble said.
This past year she assumed many different roles and led the program, in the times Coach Nobles was absent as he dealt with some health issues.
"She made a lasting impact that will be carried on from here on out. We wish Coach Holland all the best in her new position at Marcus High School, we know she will make the same impact on her students and players there as she did on everyone at McMurry," said Nobles.
Nobles found a familiar Abilene face to join him on the pitch this season.
"When we were looking for a new assistant for the women's program, one person that stood out and instantly I knew we needed to have her join our family," Noble said. "Madelyn Wilson was an exceptional player at Hardin-Simmons and has coached the last two years at Dallas Baptist. I don't know many people who can say they have won seven straight conference championships. Coach Wilson is a winner and difference maker but what made her stand out was her servant leadership. She wants the athletes to have a well-rounded experience, for the players to realize soccer is something they do but it doesn't define who they are and to help the scholar-athletes become the best versions of themselves. She plans to create lasting memories with the players and succeed in all aspects of their lives. I had no doubts in the interview process she would excel at this position and we knew she could take on the same roles as Coach Holland did in recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coach, along with her coaching duties."
Muse left the men's program to become an assistant at Incarnate Word.
