Cameron Hammond, Austin College, Football - Character & Community

CAMERON HAMMOND OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a sophomore linebacker on the 'Roos' football team from Euless, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning December 9.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

It’s both easy, and accurate, to describe Cameron Hammond as a triple threat. The sophomore Euless native has been a standout on the gridiron, in the classroom, and within his community going back not just throughout his high school career, but back into childhood. From earning academic excellence awards in his youth, to being named to the National Football Foundation’s Team of Distinction, Hammond has excelled in all three areas for the bulk of his life.

As a two-year starter as an edge rusher for the ‘Roo football team, Cameron has been a leader and one of the top players for the program each of his first two seasons, including being named honorable mention All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2024, while also serving as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and maintaining one of the top grade-point-averages across all of Austin College athletics.

A physics major with a minor in computer science, Cameron’s hard work extends to within his community both at home and during his time in Sherman, as well. Over the years, he’s put in well over a hundred hours of community service, including working with Grace’s Food Pantry in Grapevine for the holidays, in addition to aiding with 6 Stones Project Back to School in his hometown, along with Soles 4 Souls Collection Station in Southlake.

During his high school days, Cameron was an invited presenter by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, in Arlington during its Black History Month Program, where he spoke about Black Health and Wellness, the History of African Americans in Baseball, and Reflections on African Americans and the Vote. He also worked with an organization called Peer Assistant Leadership Students, mentoring young African American Students in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District.

Cameron is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society and the National Honors Society, as well as being a dean’s list student at Austin College, and last year was a member of the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team in the football program’s final year as an affiliate member of that conference. Looking ahead to the future, Cameron plans on using his experiences and education to “help identify and address adverse human health or environmental effects of programs, policies, and activities on minority and low-income populations” in pursuing environmental justice.
