GRACE MOOTHART OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior guard on the women's basketball from Melissa, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Female Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 17.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
To say that Grace Moothart keeps busy at Austin College would be a tremendous understatement. The junior women’s basketball player from Melissa, Texas, has served in various roles around the College and beyond, all while maintaining academic excellence as a triple major in business finance, sports management, and psychology, as well as dedicating plenty of time to becoming one of the best three-point shooters in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Moothart, who’s been a member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll each year she’s been at Austin College, in addition to being a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection, has also served in leadership roles both on the women’s basketball team and in campus organizations. She’s served as the Vice President of Finance for Austin College’s Campus Activities Board, as well as the treasurer for the Annual Entertainment Fund Committee, and has also worked as a finance teaching assistant during her time in Sherman.
This year, Moothart has also taken on a national role representing both Austin College and the SCAC, serving as the conference’s representative on the national NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which took her to the NCAA Convention this past January. While working with the national SAAC, Moothart has become involved with the NCAA Mental Health Advisory Group, and has continued work she’s also done on campus volunteering with Special Olympics, helping to host competitors on campus in Hughey Gym each year.
As one of the leaders of Austin College’s SAAC, she’s helped organize multiple events this year, including the group’s Change for the Better Initiative, which raised money for Reba’s Ranch House, which provides housing for the families of patients receiving extensive treatment at Texoma Medical Center. Moothart was also integral in the group’s canned food drive earlier this year, benefiting the Salvation Army.
Moothart has become a fixture within the Austin College athletics department throughout the year and even during the summer, supervising the College’s Dickey Fitness Pavilion as well as working as an athletics department student assistant, through which she has gained experience assisting with game day preparations and administration. She’s also been giving back through her passion for basketball, as well, coaching AAU girls basketball and serving as a private skills trainer for young women learning the game, all in an effort to give back to her community and help those youths become more confident and learn to grow in the sport and in life.
