EMMA FLORES OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a first-year point guard on the women's basketball team from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Female Athlete of the Week for the week beginning April 7.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Emma is involved in multiple organizations on campus, devoting her free time off the court to different roles. These include acting as a representative in the S.A.A.C, being a key member on the women’s basketball team, and being a part of the LatinXL club.
Emma chose Southwestern as a place away from home, an environment where she can find her own identity within multiple communities on campus. She has done just that. Being a member of the LatinXL club has helped Emma find a community that embraces her latino roots while making sure she gets the support, and help that she needs academically. As a point guard on the basketball team, Emma has learned how to be a leader and take charge in situations when she needs to.
Although she is a freshman Emma plans to use her skills and degree in Biology to pursue a career in Optometry where she plans to open up her own business in the San Antonio area helping everything in the latino community have eye care.
