Ricky Altamirano, University of St. Thomas, Men's Basketball - Character & Community

RICKY ALTAMIRANO OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a senior on the men's basketball team from Los Fresnos, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 10.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Ricky embodies the values of leadership, service, and academic excellence. Recently crowned the 2024 Mr. UST, Ricky is a shining example of the enriched formation inspired by UST’s core curriculum. In this role, he will represent the university at various events throughout the year, serving as a spokesperson and ambassador for the St. Thomas community.

Ricky’s leadership extends far beyond the basketball court. On campus, he is actively involved in several organizations, including the Filipino Student Association (FSA), the Electrical Engineering Club, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). As treasurer of Registered Student Organization (RSO), Ricky manages club finances, ensuring responsible and effective use of resources. Additionally, he has taken on roles as an orientation leader and a freshman mentor, helping new students transition into university life and thrive within the UST community.

Off campus, Ricky applies his skills as a test engineer at a microelectronics company, gaining valuable industry experience while balancing his commitments as a student-athlete and campus leader. His ability to excel in both academic and professional settings is a testament to his strong work ethic and dedication to personal growth.

"Being a student-athlete has taught me how to manage my time, lead by example, and stay focused on what truly matters," said Altamirano. "UST has given me the tools to grow not just as an athlete, but as a leader and a professional."

Whether he’s representing UST on the basketball court, mentoring peers, or innovating as an engineer, Ricky Altamirano exemplifies what it means to be a Celt. His leadership, service, and drive to succeed leave a lasting impact on the university and beyond.
