Bad Boy Mowers, Atlas Asphalt Lead Giving for Lyon College Football Stadium

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Two prominent local businesses, Bad Boy Mowers and Atlas Asphalt/White River Materials, have made key contributions to support the construction of a new football stadium at Lyon College. Their gifts represent a major step in the college's efforts to improve athletic facilities and boost school pride.

The stadium, which is set to open in time for the Scots' first home game of the 2025 season, will initially include a regulation-size playing field, a press box, seating for 600 fans, a digital scoreboard, concessions and restroom facilities. 

"This stadium is more than a facility—it's a symbol of Lyon College's growth and vision for the future," said Dr. Melissa Taverner, president of Lyon College. "It will elevate our football program and foster a sense of pride and belonging for students, alumni and the entire Batesville community."

Bad Boy Mowers, headquartered in Batesville, has secured the naming rights for the stadium. Peter Ballantyne, CEO of Bad Boy Mowers, expressed his excitement:

Our investment reflects our dedication to supporting education and athletics in the region, fostering growth and connection for future generations."

Atlas Asphalt/White River Materials has committed to naming the playing field. Mike Shetron, '70, speaking on behalf of the company's shareholders—Mark Lamberth, Bill Walmsley, '63, Lesa Dame, '98, Paula Fulkerson, '67 and himself—said, "This project will be a game-changer for the college and the entire region. We are thrilled to play a role in its development and look forward to seeing it thrive."

The facility is designed to be a hub of activity on campus, incorporating modern amenities and sustainable construction practices. Local firm FARCO will oversee the project.

"We are honored to partner with Lyon College on such an impactful project for our region," said Taylor Meharg, president at FARCO. "At each stage of this partnership it has been evident that this stadium is not just about sports—it's about building a space that reflects Lyon College's commitment to excellence and dedication to our community."

Lyon College alumnus Dr. Jody Smotherman, '93, vice president of business development at FARCO and a member of the Lyon College Board of Visitors, said, "FARCO is proud to be part of this exciting initiative, which will not only enhance Lyon College's athletics but also bring lasting benefits to the Batesville community. We look forward to seeing this stadium become a central point of pride for the college and our region."

"This is an exciting time for Lyon College athletics," said Kevin Jenkins, director of athletics at Lyon College. "This stadium will create a first-class experience for our student-athletes and fans while strengthening our ability to recruit top talent and foster community engagement."

Lyon College football, led by head coach Chris Douglas, is poised to reach new heights with the addition of the stadium. "This stadium will provide our student-athletes with an incredible facility to train and compete while creating an exciting atmosphere for fans," said Douglas. "It's a vital step forward for our program and a tremendous boost to our recruiting efforts."

Fundraising efforts for the stadium are ongoing, with $1.5 million raised toward the $2.5 million goal. Future plans include expanded home seating, visitor stands, a visiting team locker room and a grand entry plaza. 

Dr. David Hutchison, vice president for advancement, emphasized the importance of continued support: "This stadium project is a critical investment in the future of Lyon College Athletics. We're grateful for the generosity we've received so far and encourage others to join us in making this vision a reality."

Announcements regarding additional major commitments will be made in the near future.
