Avery Johnson, Colorado College, Women's Basketball - Character & Community

AVERY JOHNSON OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a junior on the women’s basketball team from Henderson, N.V., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Female Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 10.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Avery is the president of the Colorado College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a student-led group on campus that advocates for student-athletes, improves their experience, and builds community through service projects and community events.

“Our SAAC is a good place to advocate different things that we want on campus as student-athletes,” Johnson said. “It’s where we organize our volunteer work within our athletic department, and it’s been a lot of fun to meet and collaborate with different leaders within the community of Colorado Springs.”

The CC women’s basketball team also partners with local elementary schools, such as Centennial Elementary School in Colorado Springs. That partnership has been continuous for the last few seasons, during which the team players serve and mentor the students weekly, either at the elementary school or on campus at CC.
