Taylor Vannett, Texas Lutheran University, Softball - Character & Community

TAYLOR VANNETT OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a junior catcher and outfielder on the softball team from Kingwood, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Female Athlete of the Week for the week beginning April 14.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

By day, you can find the Kingwood, Texas, native giving campus tours to future and prospective Bulldogs before suiting up and thriving for the Bulldogs on the softball field where she was an All-SCAC Honorable Mention honoree a season ago.

Off the field, Taylor has been a ray of light and a positive influence in the Texas Lutheran community and abroad since her first day on campus three years ago. On campus, she’s helped with campus move-in and giving campus tours in addition to her contributions to TLU’s Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) while still being involved in different community service opportunities off campus.

The last two summers have seen Taylor work at Texas Lions Camp, a non-profit sleep away summer camp for children in Texas with physical disabilities, Down syndrome, cancer, burn survivors, and type 1 diabetes. The philosophy of the camp is a “can do” philosophy as they strive to give children a safe and supportive summer camp experience by adapting activities that able-bodied kids can do while promoting independence.

When asked about her experience working at Texas Lions Vannett stated, “Working at Texas Lions Camp really opened my eyes to how we are all truly made in God’s image. I feel honored knowing that I can be a part of so many kids’ first time riding a horse, shooting a bow and arrow, or swimming. The joy on the kid’s faces when they accomplish their goals is worth a lifetime.”

Her community outreach doesn’t stop there as Taylor, despite being in-season, currently volunteers at her church’s special needs ministry. “I feel like it’s my calling to help chilen learn more about God. I like finding creative ways to teach them His message,” said Vannett.

If you don’t hear her as one of main cheerleaders in the dugout, one of her teammates loudest supporters from behind the plate, you will see her donating her time and energy to help those in need in attempt to make the world a better place, leaving a positive impact on everyone she comes in contact with. Whether it be in the dugout, on the field, or in the community, Taylor Vannett has been selfless and a positive influence on her community since her arrival to Texas Lutheran.
