LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- It was an abbreviated week of action for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball teams, as what had been anticipated as the first weekend of conference play, all games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday were cancelled due the concerns related to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
In non-conference play earlier in the week, No. 5 Trinity (11-2) went 3-0, with a pair of wins over New Jersey City (10-1, 7-5) and a 11-5 victory over DeSales on Wednesday. In the Tigers’ first win over New Jersey, Rafe Chaumette led the way with a 4-for-5 performance, tying his career-high with three doubles. Jack Wisniewski led the Tigers in the second game, hitting home runs in his final two at-bats – including the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th. On Wednesday, Scott Peterson picked up three of the Tigers 11 hits, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Southwestern (7-6) went 2-0 on the week, picking up a pair of victories over DeSales (7-5) and New Jersey City (17-7). In the victory against DeSales, Lance Kruse had an RBI-triple with two outs in the bottom of the eight to lead the Pirates. In the 17-7 win over NJCU, senior Byron Dowdell II led with a 3-for-5 performance, hitting back-to-back home runs to finish with four RBIs and three runs scored.
In its lone game of the week, Texas Lutheran (9-4) posted a 16-3 win over DeSales on Tuesday. Tyler Cauley, Tyler Post, and Spencer Brandt hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the second inning to highlight the victory.
Schreiner (9-8-1) fell to Hardin-Simmons 13-10 on Tuesday. Ryan Ragle went 3-for-6 and Jeffrey Wililams had four runs batted in.
Dallas (8-8) fell to third-ranked Chapman (17-0) on Monday. Andrew Womack had two of the Crusaders’ three hits and was the only player to notch an extra base hit.
No additional play is on tap for the immediate future as, following a meeting of the league's President's Council and in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, the SCAC made the decision on Thursday to indefinitely suspend all regular season conference and non-conference competition effective Monday, March 16.
