LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Five SCAC men's teams were in action last week with the league posting a cumulative mark of 3-5 in non-conference play, which included victories over two nationally ranked teams.
No. 13 Trinity went 2-0 over the weekend, including a 5-4 home victory against Division II's 13th-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) University on Friday evening. The Tigers swept McMurry, 9-0, the following day.
In Friday's victory over St. Edward's, Trinity opened with a 2-1 advantage after doubles. Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen won the second line 8-7, and improved to 4-0 on the season. Wilson Hamilton and Jace Akagi-Okuma took the third match 8-3, and now stand at 3-1 as a team.
After Krimbill lost the first line of singles to even the match, Nguyen won in straight sets at #4 to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Settles increased the lead to 4-2 with a sixth-line victory. St. Edward's rallied as Pitts lost at #2 singles, but Akagi-Okuma had the honor of clinching the dual match with a three-set win on the fifth line. Hamilton closed out the match with a tight three-set loss at #3 singles.
No. 30 Southwestern picked up a big win on the road against the University of Redlands, upsetting the No. 18-ranked team 5-4 in the first match of the Pirates' first California trip on Saturday. The Pirates dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 24 Cal Tech on Sunday.
In Saturday's win at Redlands, Alexander Joseph and Dean Dulthummon picked up a key victory in No. 2 doubles, defeating Thomas Rezuik and Andrew Yip 8-4 to prevent Redlands from sweeping doubles.
Down 2-1 after doubles, Hunter Bajoit evened the score with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Donovan Lilou. The Redlands took the next two matches with Andrew Yip defeating Steven Tibbetts in straight sets and Basyl Libao defeating Dulthummon in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
Trailing 2-4 with the remaining three matches each going into the third and final set, the Pirates rallied, starting with Vesko Lekovic combing back from a 6-3 first-set loss to defeat Bard Cummins 6-4 and 6-1 over the final two sets. Joseph recovered from a close first-set loss to win a pair of 6-2 sets to claim a point over Rezuik.
No. 24-ranked singles player and Pirate All-American Alexis Dimanche proved his value in the clutch, clinching the match in three sets, winning two by a score of 7-5.
